Accessibility: Creating Technology Solutions for Everyone

Accessibility includes a variety of technologies that make it easier for people to see, hear, and use a computer and to customize their computing environment according to their own needs and abilities. For many people, accessibility tools make computer use possible.

Accessible technology was originally developed to enable people with disabilities to use computers, but today the demand for accessible technology is expanding. More people with mild or moderate difficulties, such as eye strain or wrist pain, realize that these tools can help them do the things they want to do more easily and comfortably. Indeed, accessible technology can benefit everyone.

Committed to Accessibility

Microsoft has a long-standing commitment to accessibility. The following are just some of the ways that Microsoft demonstrates this commitment:

  • The Windows Vista operating system. Windows Vista offers accessibility settings and programs that are designed to assist people who experience visual difficulties, hearing loss, pain in their hands or arms, or reasoning and cognitive issues.
  • Accessibility features and settings. Accessibility options are built into a variety of Microsoft products, including Microsoft Office and Windows Internet Explorer.
  • Assistive technology products. Many specialized assistive technology products are available for Windows.
  • Innovative partnerships and programs. Microsoft provides training and technology to help make a difference for people with disabilities.
  • Microsoft Accessibility Resource Centers. These centers throughout the United States offer consultation and training—at little or no cost to participants—to help people find the accessibility settings and assistive technology products that are right for them.
