Major Canadian Bank Maximizes Availability of Key IT Systems with Server Upgrade
4-page Case Study posted: 03/14/2013 Views: 372

To maintain its competitive edge in the fast-moving financial services industry, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) needs to ensure that its critical server infrastructure is always available. In tandem with supporting high availability, executives wanted to explore options for expanding the company’s server virtualization initiative to boost data center efficiency. CIBC chose to participate in the Windows Server 2012 Rapid Deployment Program to evaluate the release candidate version of the operating system. Specifically, the company opted to test the new failover clustering capabilities in the solution, including Cluster-Aware Updating. By using these and other features as part of a broader adoption of Windows Server 2012, CIBC hoped to improve the performance and availability of critical database workloads—while lowering the cost to pursue these priorities.

Cloud Hosting Provider Saves $156,000 in First Year with Operating System Upgrade
4-page Case Study posted: 10/16/2012 Views: 301

When SoftCom wanted to reduce the operational costs of its virtual private server business, it turned to the Windows Server 2012 operating system with Hyper-V. With the ease of deployment and simplified management of the Hyper-V environment, IT staff reduced administration labor by 40 hours per cluster. Windows Server 2012 is an agile and dynamic virtualization solution that data center staff use to provision virtual machines 25 percent more quickly than before and migrate virtual machines within a cluster seven times faster—with no downtime. IT staff also increased virtual machine density by more than 50 percent and reduced the data center footprint by 36 percent. SoftCom reduced hardware costs by US$156,000 within the first year of deployment and with fewer servers to administer, it will save $2,500 in annual utility costs and 1,000 hours—equating to $40,000 in annual IT labor costs.

School District Uses Bandwidth Optimization Technology, Reduces Traffic by 20 Percent
4-page Case Study posted: 10/01/2012 Views: 486

The Upper Canada District School Board needed to reduce its wide area network (WAN) traffic. Most of its 86 schools connect to the main office via 10 megabits-per-second (Mbps) links, and Internet usage consumed most of the bandwidth—downloading files from the intranet could take up to a minute. To alleviate congestion, the district deployed BranchCache, a feature in Windows Server 2012 that optimizes WAN traffic to remotely hosted sites. It reduced traffic by at least 20 percent, which freed 2 Mbps for other services. By using data deduplication, a file compression technology, the district reduced file server traffic by 50 percent, which resulted in more efficient bandwidth allocation and reduced storage requirements. The district estimates that it will avoid CDN$2 million (US$2 million) over 10 years in bandwidth and storage costs. Plus, faculty and students get faster access to files.

Customs Broker Avoids Millions of Paper Documents a Year with New ECM Solution
4-page Case Study posted: 06/07/2011 Views: 495

Willson International handles customs paperwork for companies that move goods between Canada and the United States. Willson wanted to find a more efficient way to handle millions of paper documents generated each year. First, it used Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 to convert incoming customer faxes to digital files. Then, it upgraded to Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 to create a complete enterprise content management (ECM) system that eliminates all the paper associated with shipments. Willson has improved customer service by retrieving archived shipment documents in minutes rather than days. Customers will even be able to serve their own document requests by using a customer extranet. Willson will ultimately slash paper storage costs by U.S.$100,000 annually. It has also improved employee productivity by 25 percent and can process increasing volumes with existing staff.

Architectural Firms Collaborate Virtually, Avoid $90,000 in Hardware and Travel Costs
4-page Case Study posted: 06/03/2011 Views: 1293

Zeidler Partnership Architects in Toronto, Canada, partnered with Snøhetta New York to win the bid for a high-profile Toronto project that had a tight budget and an ambitious schedule. The firms needed a fluid way for architects in New York City and Toronto to work together on the building model. Rather than ship huge data files across a wide-area network, Zeidler decided to keep all building data on one server in its Toronto office and create virtual desktops that architects would use to share models. Zeidler used Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1 for its virtualization software. The virtual desktop solution is yielding seamless collaboration among all team members, and Zeidler avoided spending U.S.$50,000 on hardware and $40,000 on travel. Ultimately, Zeidler foresees offering new professional services and virtual desktop savings growing to $80,000 annually.
