Analyzing and Mapping Demographic Data

Updated: July 16, 2004

Viewing Landmarks:

You can view all of a particular type of landmark—such as museums, airports, or zoos—in a region on your map. In this tutorial, we use the example that your students have been asked to identify the ideal location for a Thai restaurant. Students can analyze the distribution of certain types of landmarks across states, cities, or another geographical scale. By defining territories, students can see how many of a certain type of landmark can be found in their city. Demographic data can be used for research, analysis, and decision making.

View the sample project in the box to the right before you get started.

To locate landmarks:

1.

On the View menu, click Show or Hide Places.

2.

Click the Restaurants tab, and then select the type of restaurant you would like to see on the map.

3.

Click OK.

Creating territories

A territory represents logical data in geographic units. For example, if you want to determine how many Thai restaurants exist in a specific region, divide the city into territories based on the number of Thai restaurants found in different neighborhoods. First, use ZIP Codes to represent the geographic unit that becomes your territory. Then count the number of Thai restaurants in each area. Next, define territories based on the number of Thai restaurants in a region. Finally, assign each ZIP Code to a particular territory.

1.

On the Data menu, click Territories.

2.

In the Create Territories Wizard-Method dialog box, select Create manually and then click Next.

3.

Select United States from the drop-down list box, and then select ZIP Code as the geographic unit you use to define your territories. Click Next. The Create Territories wizard gives tips about selecting individually or in multiples. Click Finish.

4.

In the Territory Manager task pane, make sure that New Territory is selected, and then type the name of the territory. In this example, we have named the first territory Less than 3 Thai restaurants.Demographic Data

5.

Create another territory by clicking the New Territory button. Double-click the territory name to edit the title. Continue until you have created all the territories you require.

6.

Click a ZIP Code on your map and count the number of restaurants in that region.

7.

Click the territory that applies to that region and then click Add to Territory in the Territory Manager pane.

8.

Continue until you have assigned all the areas in the map to a specific territory.

Demographic Data

9.

On the File menu, click Save, type a name for your map, such as Thai Restaurant Distribution, and then click Save again to close your map.

Mapping Demographic Data

Now that you have defined areas according to existing Thai restaurants, narrow your search for the ideal location by selecting three possible locations for the restaurant, based on the existing facilities in each neighborhood. To further your analysis, you are going to find out more about the citizens who live in each neighborhood.

To map demographic data, such as population per region, use the Data Mapping wizard. The Data Mapping wizard helps you select the type of data you want to map and how you want to display the data.

1.

On the Data menu, click Data Mapping Wizard.

2.

Choose the map type that best represents the data you are mapping. Click the Sized Circle map and then click Next.

3.

Make sure Add Demographics to the map is selected, and from the drop-down list box, select United States demographic data, and then click Next.

4.

Select Population 2000. This provides you with the population for each area according to the 2000 census.

5.

In the Show the data by list, select ZIP Code.

Demographic Data

6.

Click Next.

7.

Click Finish. From the finished map, you can view the legend for your data in the Legends and Overview pane. MapPoint defaults to a view of the United States. Zoom in to your region.

Tip: You may find it easier to type in your locale in the Find feature from the Edit menu.

Save the map with the new data.

Making a choice

Other considerations that need to be taken into account when deciding on a location for your restaurant include which facilities exist in the nearby area. For example, hotels and theaters may provide a customer base.

1.

On the View menu, click Show or Hide Places.

2.

Select the facilities that may be of interest to you such as cinemas, theaters, galleries, and other attractions. Click OK.

Demographic Data

3.

Once you have selected a proposed location for your restaurant, click the Pushpin button and insert it onto your chosen destination. Type in a title for your pushpin.

4.

Write an explanation to support the chosen location, using data generated by this activity.
