This tutorial is designed so that you can create custom maps, track routes, and identify and annotate locations before the lesson or you can instruct your students on these skills as part of the lesson, depending on your curriculum objectives and the age of your students. View the sample project in the box to the right before you get started. Locating Destinations:The first step is to locate destinations on a map. 1. | Start Microsoft MapPoint 2002. | 2. | On the Edit menu, click Find, and then click the Place/Data tab. | 3. | In the Place name box, type the name of the place you are looking for, such as the address, city, or state. | 4. | Click Find.
MapPoint automatically displays the location you specified and zooms in on the map for viewing. If there is more than one place with the same name, MapPoint provides a list of the different locations. On the list, click the name of the place for which you are searching. | 5. | By using the zoom feature, you can take a closer look at an area to pinpoint an exact location. |
Adding pushpinsBy using pushpins, you can mark a location on a map and then add a link or enter information about that location in the pushpin. 1. | On the View menu, select Toolbars, and make sure that the Drawing toolbar is selected. | 2. | On the Drawing toolbar, click the Create Pushpin button, move the cursor to the location on the map where you want the pushpin, and then click again.

| 3. | In the pushpin's text balloon, highlight Untitled. Type a location, date, or any other important data that defines the significance of the location. In our example, the date that gold was discovered in this region is used. You can add more text to further describe this location. | 4. | Continue searching for locations and adding pushpins to complete your project.

|
Tip: You can link pushpins to related sites on the World Wide Web by typing in the URL address in the text field. Tracing Routes and Getting Directions:You can create clear directions explaining how to reach a destination. 1. | On the Route menu, click Directions. | 2. | Click the top line, which states Click here to plan route and get directions.
| 3. | The Route Planner task pane is displayed. Type in the starting point (for example, the name of an airport) and click Add to Route. | 4. | Type in the finishing point (i.e., San Francisco) and click Add to Route. | 5. | Click Get Directions. | 6. | The quickest possible route between your two destinations is displayed on the screen, including a highlighted route on the map.
| 7. | On the File menu, click Save. Give your map a title and save it to the desired folder. |
