Distributing software for Work at Home rights and Student Option

Updated: December 3, 2007

If you decide to take advantage of the Campus and School Agreement Student Option or the faculty/staff Work at Home licenses available through Microsoft Academic Volume Licensing, access to media by your users must be restricted and regulated. All media for software distributed for Work at Home or Student Option use must be acquired from a Microsoft-approved fulfillment source. Software may be distributed to those users in the following four ways only:

1.

Purchase and distribute one copy of each applicable CD-ROM or disk set to each authorized user. These CDs or disk sets (known as student media) must be purchased from your Authorized Education Reseller (AER) in quantities not exceeding the number of licensed users. You cannot duplicate media for Student Option or Work at Home use. Please refer to the Student/Work at Home media order form (170 KB Microsoft Word file) for a list of CDs or disk sets that are currently available to order from your AER.

Note

Physical media for Microsoft Office 2003 system software for Student Option or Work at Home is no longer available as of June 30, 2007. Learn more (46 KB Microsoft Word file).

2.

Allow controlled download from your secure network server(s) or other storage device(s) utilizing volume licensing media that you acquired for installation on your institution machines (i.e. Starter Kit media).

3.

Have users bring-in their computers for manual installation by you at a central location that you control utilizing volume licensing media.

4.

Use a system of controlled short-term checkout of applicable volume licensing media solely for purposes of individual user installation. This option is available only for products for which a Volume Licensing Key (VLK) is not required (that is, products that do not include Microsoft Product Activation). You cannot distribute VLKs to users for Student Option or Work at Home use. Your reseller can assist you in determining which products require a VLK.

Note

The information on this page applies to customers in the United States and Canada. Customers in other locations should refer to their regional Microsoft Licensing Web site or contact their local Microsoft representative for more information.

Informing Work at Home and Student Option users about their license rights

Faculty, staff, and student users DO NOT own the license or the CDs, rather they are authorized to use the licensed software and media pursuant to the terms and conditions of the license(s) granted to the institution for the term of the institution's agreement. By extending these rights, your institution accepts responsibility for communicating the terms and conditions to your users. This includes keeping accurate records of software use and distribution. To help facilitate this communication, downloadable acceptance forms are available from the right side of this page that you can have your users sign when obtaining their software.
