Midtown Madness proves that combat racing sims can be low in gore and high in
FUN! This game will not stall out any time soon but we do recommend the
steering wheel.
"This is the closest any sports entertainment title has come to absolute
perfection! Midtown Madness has been inducted into DSP’s 'Hall of Fame', and
deservedly so!" - Frank Eva, editor
I can’t remember being more pleasantly surprised reviewing a product that I had
little knowledge of to begin with. If you’re looking to flex your system’s
muscles and go for high action fun, Midtown Madness is a no-brainer. Your
system’s capabilities will be exploited to the max with exceptional visuals and
sound, while your sense of humor will be taken for a ride. If this is where
Microsoft is heading with its latest entries in the world of PC entertainment,
then count me in. I can only guess that it won’t end in Chicago. There are
plenty more cities to explore, not to mention vehicles. Keep your eyes peeled
for some add-on packs if this product sells the way it should. Currently priced
in the $30 range, Midtown Madness is a steal! Don’t miss out on the fun!
I thought this game was great. It was probably one of the most fun games I ever
played. They should have added options to choose skill level, I just could not
be any levels after the third, and I played for hours straight, literally.
Sound was good, especially with the announcer and people in other cars
screaming at you. Plus the sound effects of when you crashed into something,
and the engine of the different cars was extremely good. The graphics were
unbelievable, and the cars looked more realistic especially with the lighthing
and most definitly the great reflection effects. I decided to give this game
9.5/10.
I’m sure we have all wanted to run ramped through city streets at one time or
another. In Midtown Madness, you can do this without actually killing anyone.
In the end, Midtown Madness is a fantastic and adventurous arcade racing game.
If you are a fan of any type of racing game, don’t leave this one on the store
shelves.
Midtown Madness easily transcends the boundaries of racing games. Its appeal is
unlimited and gameplay totally addictive. Right now, you can’t play a better
game!
This game comes highly recommended. How often is it that you get to go 120mph
through crowded city streets and face no consequences? However, I do have to
advise anyone who buys this game to wait thirty minutes after playing this game
before trying to drive in the real world.
But the real beauty of the game are the choices of style or strategy available
to you. You might opt for all out speed with well controlled handbrake turns at
every corner. Then again, you could go for the 'road rage' option bludgeoning
your way through the traffic and crushing the competition.
Playing the game is a lot of fun, there is no other way to describe it.
Whatever developer came up with the idea of allowing a player to drive a
vehicle wildly around congested city streets is a genius. The basic goal is to
finish a race without destroying your car or truck.
An outrageous ride to insanity.
The graphics in this game were exceptionally good. The car models were perfect,
while the city was the same. Everything seemed to be textured so perfectly, and
I'm just not sure how much better car games can get. I thought this game was
great. It was probably one of the most fun games I ever played. 9.5 out of 10!
Car racing games just don't get much better than this, folks. If you enjoy car
games at all, you absolutely can't go wrong by picking this game up. Heck, even
if you don't like car games you'll probably enjoy Midtown Madness, our newest
Editor's Choice game. Now check out the many other screenshots we took. Yeah we
went nuts but it's awesome to just look at shots of this game.
It's the "cops and robbers" of multiplayer that will keep me coming. Honking,
cutting off, and crashing into people in real life means trouble, but doing the
same thing to the same people in Midtown Madness is entertainment and laughs
for all.
Microsoft and Angel Studios have come up with another winner. Appealing to
basically any gamer (although fans of Grand Theft Auto might be disappointed as
it is nothing like that) who enjoys a good, fun game.
Even if you don't like to race, you should be really interested in Midtown
Madness...we at MeccaWorld sure are. This is a game that should really put a
dent in the fender of the racing genre. Unlike other racing games, Midtown
Madness serves more than just the purpose of racing, it also lets gamers to
travel around the city of Chicago in a semi truck, and see how life like games
can really make things look. So, regardless of you're into racing games or
you're just a casual gamer, you should really enjoy all the things that Midtown
Madness has to offer in terms of both gameplay and realism.
Midtown Madness may not be perfect in every technical detail, but taken as a
whole, it plays like a virtuoso, very real and involving. This game reminds me
why Microsoft is Microsoft...there is no one that can put together a package
any prettier than they can!
"The title just recently went gold, and from what we seen it's already easily
the best of the Madness series"
Now Microsoft is taking its success and moving into the city, while not
abandoning the rollicking free-for-all spirit that has made the whole Madness
series so distinctive and fun. Its forthcoming game Midtown Madness combines
country roughnecking with urban sprawl in a truly unique way.
Midtown Madness definitely lives up to the expectation it has created for
itself. No matter what type of gamer you are, this is one title that needs to
be checked out. With eye-catching graphics, intense game play, and replay value
that'll grant gamers fun for virtually forever, Midtown will keep you and your
buddies occupied for hours on end. So take our word for it, and hop in your
vehicle and get yourself a copy. Oh and do us a favor, stay on the right side
of the road.
Midtown Madness also supports force feedback, naturally, and the build I played
nearly shook my computer desk to pieces in certain areas. Once you blow a tire
or four you'll see what I mean, either that or plow into about a dozen cars
sitting at a stop light.
Finally, a driving game that will make your console-owning friends jealous! In
the end, what makes this game so damn addictive is the little details you see
everywhere. Every car has the appropriate horn, from the subdued beep of a
Beetle to the mighty roar of the Century. When you back up the bus or the big
rig, you'll hear that familiar beeping sound. When you unlock the Mustang
Cruiser, you can run the sirens. Newspaper machines throw out newspapers when
you hit them, telephone poles will wreck you if you hit them at low speed, but
snap when you hit them quickly. Everything in the game is designed to give you
the feeling of actually racing in city streets.
Midtown Madness has everything going for it. It's a wild ride from beginning to
end. Everything, from the clever graphical touches to the wild game engine
physics, seems custom built for one thing and one thing only; the gamer's total
enjoyment.
Where this game really excels is in the gameplay. You have to pretend like you
are in the middle of one of those chases you see on TV all the time. Everything
is a gamble. You never know when the light is going to change, or when a
drawbridge will go up. Factor in the police, who seem intent on driving you off
the road, and you have a tough game here. Make the wrong move and you'll end up
going head on with a tour bus or sleeping with the fish at the bottom of a
river.
I think Midtown Madness will take both the Madness series and arcade racers to
new heights. When this one hits the shelves, my guess is it won’t stay there
long as hungry gamers snatch it up.
The cars in the game are accurately rendered and take some pretty impressive
damage as you progress through the game. The city in the game is designed very
accurately, complete with 80km of roads, city landmarks, pedestrians, changing
weather conditions, a functional police system, dozens of shortcuts and
hundreds of working objects, from working bridges to parking meters. In fact,
it uses a real road map of Chicago to show you exactly where you are located
while you drive! And everything in the game can be damaged; for example the
streetlights, cones, drawbridges, traffic, etc. It has exciting racing
scenarios with no fixed tracks to restrict players. Gamers create their own
best courses with virtually unlimited shortcuts and routes through the city.
All these features make this game stand away from the crowd, and give you hours
of fun to drive.
Graphically the game looks great, from the landmarks to the choice of cars
available. The AI in the playable preview seemed excellent, with the other
racers putting up a good fight while the neutral traffic behaved realistically.
Oncoming cars will stop and pull off the road if they are in danger, and if hit
they don't continue on their way (something the Need for Speed games have
repeatedly failed to do). While you're darting through the city streets,
Midtown Madness feels like a combination of The French Connection and The Blues
Brothers, and on the freeway (good old I-94) the game is almost as exciting as
Ronin or To Live and Die in LA. The thrill of driving against traffic and
weaving in and out is just too extreme to fully appreciate until you try it.
This is a game for hardcore race fans, or even those who like a fun and
somewhat mindless gaming experience, and want something a little different.
Motoring around in Midtown Madness really does give one the impression of being
in Chicago. No, really. There were just the right touches all the way through
the game. The weather effects were dead on for Chicago. The taxi drivers were
just as suicidal as in the Windy City! The city itself wasn't just lifeless
background. Hitting objects in the game resulted in the destruction or moving
of the object, they weren't just barriers to bounce off of. The pedestrians
were all quite realistic; diving out of the way and screaming was their usual
reaction to me. In addition, the pedestrians, police, and ambient traffic
levels are all configurable, allowing you to decide just how much "city" you
want to experience. As an added bonus, the announcer, pedestrians, and other
drivers even all have pretty authentic Chicago accents. In fact, the announcer
frequently told me to "Step away from da cahr" after I'd put it into the
nearest wall for the umpteenth time.
"Overall, I think MS has a winner on their hands. I know I'll go out and buy it
when it ships."
I am really enjoying this game as you can tell. Despite a few minor flaws
(which may very well be corrected by release time) the focus of this game is
fun and it delivers. I always wanted a great looking race through a city game
and now I found it. This type of game may not be for everybody. But for those
looking for a fun city arcade racer, look no further than Midtown Madness. It
should be going gold within a week or two so you won't have much of a wait! I
know I will be buying the full release version when it is released, and that is
saying alot considering the beta has just about everything you can do minus a
few touches here and there. I just want a full featured version.
