Microsoft Helps Intel Corp. Align Design Teams

Updated: October 22, 2004

Executive Summary

Collaboration is vital to your business’s success. If individuals and teams can’t share data quickly and easily, production delays can keep your product from getting to market. Intel, the world’s largest producer of semiconductors, discovered that its product development engineers were using paper notebooks to collect vital information. Not only was the format of the data they collected inconsistent, members couldn’t easily share information with team members. Intel needed to find a standardized communications technology to support collaboration.

Intel turned to a Microsoft-based solution to help the company manage its global knowledge and process information.

Intel invested in the Knowledge Capture Tool to help solve problems at the company’s fabrication facilities. The tool is based on Microsoft Office InfoPath 2003 and designed to take full advantage of the Intel’s Xeon server technology.

According to Chuck Seely, manager of Intel’s technology and manufacturing group, "The Knowledge Capture Tool provided a great mechanism to easily capture knowledge essential to transfer processes to the factory and ramp them up."

To help organize and store the information, Intel implemented a Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003. SharePoint helped Intel employees instantly find the solutions to problems.

This Microsoft solution allowed Intel to:

Collect, organize, and share information worldwide.

Create a centralized repository for content and communications.

Solve problems by using shared information.

Manage knowledge across collaborative teams, timelines, and global boundaries.

Innovate and make better knowledge-based decisions.

Reduce training time–the Microsoft solution works with the familiar Microsoft Office desktop.
