Simplify Preinstallation with the Express Deployment Tool

Express Deployment Tool Overview

The Express Deployment Tool (EDT) helps to quickly, easily, and correctly preinstall PCs with genuine Microsoft Office. The EDT offers these benefits:

Get the Office 2010 OPK

Office OPK Information

The OEM Preinstallation Kit (OPK) for Office 2010 is a set of tools, documentation, and product files that assist licensed original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in preloading Office 2010 and Office Starter 2010 on new computers for distribution to end users. Preloading these productivity suites adds immediate value for your customers and also gives them the option to purchase Product Key Cards for Office 2010. Users are prompted to install Office 2010 or Office Starter 2010 on target computers.

The following document provides in-depth information about how to download and use the OPK.

Use this video guide to learn how to install the new Office 2010 OPK.

Microsoft Security Essentials

Make sure you include Microsoft Security Essentials completely free with your PC when you include Office. Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your customers' PCs that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

Hard Disk Drive Recovery Solution with Windows 7

Hard drive recovery is a requirement for distributing Office Starter 2010 . A hard-disk-based recovery solution enables Windows 7 to automatically recover from most known causes for unbootable systems as a result of loss or corruption of files. Using the Windows OPK, you can create this solution with Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE).

This white paper also contains information about pre-loading Microsoft Office 2010 as part of the hard disk drive recovery solution, which is required when installing Office 2010 Starter.

Prescriptive Virtual Drive (Q:) Relabel and Anti-Malware White Paper

The "Click-to-Run" virtual drive (Q:) is created when Office Starter 2010 is installed. The following two white papers provide prescriptive image creation steps to relabel this drive, and include registry keys to avoid anti-malware incompatibility.

  • Labeling the Click-to-Run Virtual Drive White Paper .pdf 1.2 MB

Microsoft Office Starter 2010, which will be preinstalled on OEM machines, uses the new Click-to-Run (C2R) technology to host the Office Starter files in a virtualized application space. This restricted space is mapped to a drive that cannot be accessed by the user, but is visible in Windows Explorer. To help communicate to the user that this drive is not accessible, Microsoft provides OEMs with the ability to label this drive with a more descriptive localized label.

  • Office Starter 2010 Anti-Malware Guide .pdf 208 KB

Office Starter 2010 uses Microsoft Click-to-Run application virtualization technology, which can limit accessibility by security (anti-virus or anti-malware) software programs. Click-to-Run may also generate false positives and prevent detection of malware code if not remediated by the OEM or security vendor.

32-Bit Office 2010 Versus 64-Bit Office 2010

Use 32-bit Office 2010 as the default.

Microsoft strongly recommends that unless your customer requests a 64-bit installation, system builders use the 32-bit version. This recommendation is given primarily for two reasons:

  1. Improved end user experience with the environment most commonly used
  2. The rich ecosystem of add-on applications developed only for previous 32-bit-only Office versions
