Surface cameras and the Camera app

Surface has two integrated cameras that you can use to make video calls, record videos, and take pictures. There’s also the built-in Camera app that helps you get even more out of your cameras.

Surface cameras

You can use the front camera to have a video chat with a friend, or the back camera to record meetings and events hands-free. You can also use either camera to take photos.

A privacy light appears whenever either camera is on so there are no surprises.

Not sure where the cameras and privacy lights are located on your Surface? See Surface features.

Rear camera angle when holding comfortably

When you hold Surface at a comfortable angle, or rest it on its kickstand, you can see what the rear-facing camera is recording.

The front camera points up at your face for optimal video calling.

Take photos and record videos

To take a photo or record a video:

  • On the Start screen, tap or click Camera, and then tap or click the onscreen Camera or Video button.

Take a panorama

Here’s how to create unique, immersive panoramas by using the Camera app:

Step 1: Open the Camera app, and tap the Panorama Panorama button button.
Step 2: Point the camera at your starting point for the panorama, and tap the screen to start.
Step 3: Slowly tilt or rotate the camera in any direction. When you align the new image with the existing images, the camera automatically takes the next image.

For best results, hold the camera level, as if it’s on a tripod, as you rotate and tilt it. Move slowly and steadily as you line up an image, and then pause to capture it. If you move too far too fast, the Camera app will warn you onscreen to move back towards the previous position. If your body blocks the viewfinder, keep the camera in the same place and step around it until you’re out of the way.

Step 4: If you want to retake the last image taken, tap or click Undo. Otherwise, tap or click the check mark Panorama check mark when you’re done.
Step 5: To see your panorama, swipe up from the bottom or down from the top, and tap or click Camera roll.

Camera options

To switch between front and back cameras or to set camera options such as the timer and exposure, swipe down from the top edge of the screen.

To modify the photo aspect ratio, show or hide grid lines, adjust flicker, and turn on or off location info, open the Settings charm, and then choose Options.
