Set up your Surface after service

After a service request, you'll need to set up your Surface, restore your files, and reinstall your apps.

Step 1: Complete setup

Turn on your Surface and complete setup.

  • Connect to Wi-Fi and not to mobile broadband when you set up your Surface. The setup process uses significant amounts of data and connecting to Wi-Fi instead will help you avoid extra data charges against your data plan.
  • Syncing or sending data across a mobile broadband connection could result in extra charges. For more info, see Manage your mobile broadband data use.
  • Be sure to enter the same Microsoft account you were using on your original Surface. This enables you to access your same settings, calendar, contacts, and email.

Step 2: Restore your files

Add your files that you previously backed up, as recommended in How to prepare your Surface for service.

Use OneDrive

If you backed up your files to OneDrive from either the OneDrive app or from File Explorer on the desktop, you can access them whenever you need them. For more information about using OneDrive, see Using OneDrive on Surface.

Other ways to restore your files

Use the steps below to restore your files if you used one of these backup methods.

  • File History. From the Start screen, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and tap or click Search, and in the search box enter restore file. Then tap or click Restore your files with File History.
  • File Explorer. You can manually copy files to your Documents, Videos, Pictures, and Music libraries from another storage location from within File Explorer in Windows.
  • HomeGroup. To restore your files from a homegroup, see HomeGroup from start to finish for tips.

Step 3: Reinstall your apps

Reinstall Windows Store apps

Step 1: On the Start screen, tap or click Store.
Step 2: Swipe down from the top edge of the screen (or right-click your mouse), and then tap or click Your apps.
Step 3: Tap or click the apps that you want to install, and then tap or click Install.

Reinstall other apps

To reinstall apps from a CD or DVD, the Internet, or a network, see Install and uninstall apps on Surface Pro.
