Type Cover

Type Cover is a slim version of a traditional keyboard with moving keys. It gives you the speed and feel of a classic keyboard, coupled with portability. Type Cover weighs about .5 pounds and is just 5 mm thick.

And just like the Touch Cover keyboard, Type Cover magnetically clicks into place and doubles as a cover for your Surface. Type Cover lets you go from tablet to laptop in an instant.

Touch Cover or Type Cover?

Touch Cover and Type Cover

You can switch back and forth between the two keyboards if you’d like. To remove a keyboard, just pull it away, like you’re tearing a page out of a book. And then click in the keyboard that you want to use. For info about this see, Touch Cover.

Fold back the cover

If you don’t want to type on Type Cover you can fold it back behind the touchscreen, like a magazine cover.

When Type Cover is folded back, Surface responds only to the touchscreen. This way you can’t accidently enter text on the keyboard when the cover is folded back. To type text, tap in a text field or area where you can type and the on-screen keyboard appears. For more info, see How to use the on-screen keyboard.

Close the cover

When you close the cover, the screen turns off. The cover protects the screen while you’re in transit. And later when you open the cover, Surface wakes up. For more info about this, see Power, sleep, and wake.

Can I use a mouse?

Yes. You can use the trackpad as you would use a mouse, or connect a USB or Bluetooth® mouse. For info on using a USB mouse, see Connect a mouse, printer, and more.

Function keys

The Fn or function key toggles the top row of keys on Type Cover between function keys (F1F12) and the other function printed on the key. For example for F1, press Fn + the key with F1 and the Mute symbol.
