The Microsoft Vendor Program (MSVP) has specific criteria that suppliers are required to meet. Suppliers are also evaluated against certain Microsoft business objectives. That's why not every vendor that is referred to the program and that meets the basic criteria is admitted.

Premier vendors are the featured vendor by category in the e-procurement system that is used by Microsoft employees. In some cases, a vendor may be the sole supplier in a category. Some categories of goods or services may not have a vendor at the MSVP Premier level. Premier vendors make up no more than the top 20 percent of the Microsoft vendor base.

Microsoft annually recognizes vendors that consistently provide an outstanding level of service and quality through the MSVP Excellence Awards Program.
The award categories are:
- Vendor of the Year
- Value Excellence
- Quality Excellence
- Service Excellence
- Diversity Excellence
- Technology Excellence
- Environmental Excellence
All nominations are submitted by the Category Manager (CM) and Vendor Account Manager (VAM) by using an official entry form. Vendors cannot nominate themselves. An award selection committee then determines the winners, which are announced and awarded at the MSVP Annual Vendor Summit each year.
In 2009, Microsoft issued seven MSVP Excellence Awards to key vendors whose performance over the past year demonstrated exceptional commitment and service.
Vendor of the Year Award: Compass Group, North American Division
Among other contributions, Compass Group provides Microsoft with hospitality and facilities management services in nine countries spanning three continents. In North America alone, the Compass Group provides food service for 9 million people each year, manages 9 conference spaces in Silicon Valley and 141 in the Puget Sound region, manages audiovisual (AV) services, and provides design recommendations for new AV-related construction projects and facility upgrades.
Diversity Award: Corona Wright
Corona Wright managed the expansion of Microsoft's North Campus garage in Redmond, Washington. The expansion involved the addition of two new parking levels that matched the previous construction, and a challenging fire alarm retrofit during the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Corona Wright completed the project on time, under budget, and without complaints from Microsoft employees.
Environmental Award: DB Engineering
DB Engineering designed and created a scalable cooling model for a large off-site test facility, worked closely with the site engineers to fine-tune the design, and ensured its compliance with multiple air handler suppliers.
Service Award: GLY Construction
GLY Construction provided pre-construction and construction services for building Microsoft’s 2.74 million square-foot West Campus in Redmond, Washington. The project involved demolishing several existing structures and building a 4,600-car underground parking garage (1.6 million square feet). As part of this project, GLY built soccer fields, ballparks, water features, and a three-building Commons complex featuring space for 20 food and retail vendors and four training rooms (140,000 square feet). In addition, GLY built four buildings (1 million square feet) to accommodate office space for 4,000 Microsoft employees and multiple hardware and software labs.
Technology Award: Compass Group, North American Division
In partnership with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), Compass Group developed design guidelines that helped Microsoft realize US$2.7 million in capital savings, improve its software, and increase the quality of OEM products.
Quality Award: Crispin Porter & Bogusky LLC
Crispin Porter & Bogusky LLC created and executed the multimedia "I'm a PC" advertising campaign, which included content for television, the Web, and billboards, as well as user‐generated content.
Value Award: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST)
Hitachi GST helped the Xbox team meet its holiday goal by overcoming a shortage of components integral to the Xbox console and by developing processes and systems to manage the quality of the Xbox product. Additionally, Hitachi GST provided an equitable financial solution for the Fiscal Year 2009 holiday season to help meet Microsoft's demanding production schedule, while providing financial incentives to contractors for meeting that schedule.
