Neutralizing our carbon emissions
Addressing our carbon footprint
At Microsoft, we take responsibility for our own actions.
100% Carbon neutral
Microsoft’s global operations have been 100 percent carbon neutral since June 2012.
We achieve this by increasing operational efficiency, by procuring renewable energy equal to 100 percent of our energy consumption and holding ourselves responsible with our internal carbon fee.
Putting a price on carbon
Our carbon neutral strategy is based on company-wide accountability achieved through our global internal carbon fee. This chargeback model puts a price on carbon and makes each of our business divisions responsible for the carbon emissions associated with their electricity use and air travel.
This has created a virtuous cycle of environmental responsibility within Microsoft: inspiring action, delivering results, raising greater awareness, and in turn, motivating more action.
Since the fee was implemented in July 2012, we have:
9.5M metric tons
Reduced company emissions by 9.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
14 billion kwh
Purchased more than 14 billion kilowatt hours of green power.
