Basics for safer downloading at work

Get ready: Strengthen your computer's defenses

Start by decreasing your computer's vulnerability to outside risks. Keep in mind that these protections may already be in place at your company, so check with your system administrator before you get started.

Improve your computer's overall security

Lay the protective groundwork. Follow step-by-step instructions tailored to your version of Windows to use a firewall, install antivirus software, and update Windows.

Set your antivirus program to actively scan all incoming files and e-mail attachments before you open them. This process is different for every antivirus program, so consult the manual or online help for instructions.

Use a spam filter. Many e-mail programs offer filters that can help block unwanted messages. Microsoft Outlook 2007 has an improved junk e-mail filter (and new features that disable links and warn you about threatening content). Read an overview of the Junk E-mail Filter in Outlook 2007 or learn about the Junk E-mail Filter in Outlook 2003.

Install and run a program to help detect and remove spyware. Your company may provide an anti-spyware program on its network. If your company doesn't offer this, consider using Microsoft Windows Defender, which is included in Windows Vista, and is available as a free download for Microsoft XP SP2. Alternatively, there are other free anti-spyware software programs available.
