Whether large or small, every business shares the need for a well-managed and secure infrastructure. To help companies advance from costly and inefficient IT environments, Microsoft offers guidance in the form of the Infrastructure Optimisation Model.
Pioneered by Gartner and adopted and modified by Microsoft, the Infrastructure Optimisation Model helps customers understand and subsequently improve the state of their IT infrastructure, describes what that means in terms of cost, security risk, and operational agility, and provides a logical roadmap on how to get there. The key stages are:
 - Basic: We Fight Fires - environments extremely hard to control, have very high desktop and server management costs, are generally very reactive to security threats, and have very little positive impact on the ability of the business to benefit from IT.
- Standardised: We're Gaining Control - controls through the use of standards and policies to manage desktops and servers, but systems are still quite reactive.
- Rationalised: We Enable Business - costs involved in managing desktops and servers are at their lowest and processes and policies have matured to begin playing a large role in supporting and expanding the business.
- Dynamic: We're a Strategic Asset - fully aware of the strategic value their infrastructure provides in helping them run their business efficiently and staying ahead of competitors.
