How do you create a professional learning opportunity where teachers keep on developing, building the knowledge, skills and experience they need in today's information-rich learning environment?
In Western Australia, Microsoft is partnering with SchoolKiT and the Department of Education and Training to create such an opportunity. Over five years, more than 13,000 Western Australian government school teachers will receive ICT professional development via a customised version of SchoolKiT's pdPoint.
SchoolKiT and pdPoint
SchoolKiT specialises in lifelong professional development. Its pdPoint software is designed as a complete professional development package for schools, with a focus on technology integration. SchoolKiT worked with the Western Australian Department of Education and Training to adapt pdPoint to specific educational needs and now the software is an important resource for developing ICT skills and curriculum leadership in teachers.

Using pdPoint to manage professional development
pdPoint prepares teachers for the digital classroom by showing how specific software products such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel can be used to design learning activities for students. The program also uses plenty of Australian content to keep it relevant.
Teachers simply log on to create and manage their own professional development plans and download content and skill development modules. They can complete self-paced courses and even sign up for instructor-led classes, where they interact with instructors and colleagues in an online forum. These workshops introduce methodologies and technology integration principles in the context of curriculum-focused activities that the participant can immediately apply in the classroom.
Western Australian teachers are enthusiastic about the opportunity to connect with each other via pdPoint. Across this vast state, over 1000 teachers are getting together for a whole new world in professional development - the beginnings of online learning communities.
