Note: "Zero to BI in Two Intense Days" is part of the "Zero to BI and Reporting Workshop Series" which also includes a separate workshop titled "Zero to Corporate Reporting in Two Intense Days". For more information on the Workshop Series click here.
Turn your ordinary business data into extraordinary business decisions.
To keep pace with change, today's organisations need access to up-to-date, accurate business data - to enable informed and intelligent decisions.
A Business Intelligence solution from Microsoft can help you capture the right data - so you can gain visibility and insight into your overall operation. Find out how to take your business from Zero to BI in just two days - at this upcoming Microsoft Workshop.
Zero to BI in Two Intense Days has been designed to cover the entire lifecycle development of a Multi-dimensional Data Mart / Data Warehouse. You will learn how to start small - with a manageable, low risk / high value, pilot project. As part of the pilot, you will use how to utilise Server 2000 to build OLAP cubes that you can browse with Excel Pivot Tables or third party BI clients. This initial pilot exercise will then form the basis for you to build additional functionality, dimensions and cubes into your Data Mart / Data Warehouse.
The course will focus on the use of Microsoft SQL Server Data Transformation and Analysis Services, as well as the new Microsoft BI Accelerator, to rapidly develop well-architected cubes based on tried and tested templates for Retail, Sales and Marketing, Financial Services and Manufacturing applications. You will also get hands-on, 64 bit experience by using the latest SQL Server 64 bit database running on the 64 bit Intel Itanium2 server.
At the end of the course you should be able to rapidly build server based cubes from a variety of data sources that can be used by people throughout your company.

This 2 day training takes place in a hands-on lab environment where you will explore end-to-end data warehousing using Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and Office XP to deliver BI solutions. A basic familiarity with Excel and SQL Server 2000 or a similar Database system would be helpful. Students may optionally order an evaluation edition of SQL Server from http://msstore.datacom.com.au/sql/ if to facilitate some familiarity with the system prior to the event. Following is an outline of what we will cover during the 2 days:
Day 1 - Introduction to building a BI solution using Microsoft technology
The agenda for Day 1 will include:
| • | Architectural Review introducing major components such as the Relational Database, the Multidimensional Database, the ETL tools, the standards for cross vendor, cross platform data access, the Data Warehouse Alliance and range of third party tools and metadata standards. |
| • | Data Warehousing Fundamentals - including the various schema alternatives, E/R modelling v Dimensional Modelling and how to build and use Star Schema to create OLAP cubes. |
| • | Introduction to key OLAP concepts and terminology such as dimensions, levels, kembers, hierarchies and the MDX multidimensional query syntax. |
| • | Introduction to Extract Transform and Load (ETL) operations using Data Transformation Services (DTS) to take data from source systems into staging areas and from there to build star schemas. |
Day 2 - Building BI solutions with Analysis Services (Continued)
Day 2 will include sessions on:
| • | Building BI solutions with Analysis Services. This section covers the creation of cubes, calculated members, security, scalability and other issues related to building a Dimensional Data Mart. |
| • | Using the Microsoft SQL Server Accelerator for BI. This tool facilitates accelerated development of staging area databases, star schemas, cubes and associated DTS packages. It includes templates for Sales and Marketing Analytics and Retail Analytics. This section covers the use of the tool, and lets you go through the process yourself, creating a complete dimensional Data Mart using one of the templates. |
| • | Deploying front-end BI Solutions using Office XP. Finally you will learn how to use Excel 2002 Pivot Tables to connect to the cubes you have built - as well as analyse and graph them. You will also be shown how to use Office Web Components to easily create web pages that allow staff to view the results of your BI work, thus allowing management to push KPI visibility and management decisions down to the customer-facing staff that can really make a difference. |
