Improving the Quality, Safety and Continuum of careImproving the Quality, Safety and Continuum of care

Applications built on the Microsoft .NET Framework enable practitioners to access patient records rapidly, leading to fewer misdiagnoses.

  • Microsoft helps to provide immediate access to effective decision-support tools, which ensures that patients benefit from the most successful treatment methods.
  • Microsoft Integration technologies enable an ongoing personal health record with data amalgamated from diverse sources. As a result, individuals benefit from improved follow-up care, more accurate diagnoses and the likelihood that underlying conditions can be identified more rapidly.
  • Equitable access to high-quality resources and information delivered through Microsoft Web technologies helps empower all patients to manage their own wellbeing, regardless of location.

Case Study

Royal Melbourne Hospital built a system called eAssessments which enables practitioners to assess patients at the bedside and enter their observations into a Pocket PC. This information is then accessible to all authorised staff to improve the continuum of care.

Now both neurologists and dermatologists can assess new patients at the bedside and enter their observations on a Pocket PC. These notes are synchronised wirelessly onto the hospital server, updating the patient's record to provide authorised staff with an up-to-the-minute picture as well as a complete aggregated history.

Key Benefits
  • eAssessment is an easy and reliable way to keep track of the large volumes of patient information over a period of time and review it readily.
  • A more structured assessment process has led to more accurate and reliable data and improved patient outcomes across the continuum of care.
  • There is the potential to expand the solution to include hosting the eAssessment client on a Pocket PC phone edition and synchronise over GPRS. The clinician can save time because data is entered just once and is synchronised across the system.
  • Drag-and-drop development and easy debugging tools in Microsoft Visual Studio .NET made it possible to create this application in three months.

Key Microsoft Technologies
eAssessments is collectively a Microsoft .NET technology and Microsoft .NET Compact Framework solution comprising two interfaces - one for consultation and one for administration. The consultation interface resides on the device and the administration interface is an ASP.NET Web application that resides on the application Web server. The information is stored locally within a Microsoft SQL Server 2000 CE Edition (SQL Server CE) database, with all information replicated to and from the server.

"This (eAssessments) application saves a lot of time in the clinician's day. Patient lists are instantly available, data is only entered once and data is easy to retrieve."

Mary Wollmering, Acting Chief Information Officer, Royal Melbourne Hospital
