Increasing the Effectiveness of Your IT InfrastructureIncreasing the Effectiveness of Your IT Infrastructure

Microsoft's platform for Service Oriented Architecture helps IT staff to maximise legacy systems as they move towards a more responsive and adaptive infrastructure.

  • Microsoft Systems Management tools help IT staff to structure and administer IT infrastructure far more cost-efficiently. Complete control of their environment gives them the agility to rapidly deploy new systems and solutions that meet the dynamic needs of their organisation.
  • Microsoft collaboration capabilities deliver a quantum leap forward in the way that an IT infrastructure supports contemporary, efficient work practices.

Case Study

The Microsoft platform has enabled the Counties Manukau and Waitemata District Health Boards to have a single view of the entire healthAlliance organisation as well as Web access to email and common calendar information.

In what it called 'Project Fusion', this District Health Board decided to merge two separate infrastructures comprising 4,700 PCs and 8,500 users. At the same time, it upgraded to Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 running on the Microsoft Windows operating system, and deployed Windows XP to all desktops, including the Microsoft Office System.

The aim was to provide clinical and business users with stable and resilient technology and ensure they had a reliable, secure and agile infrastructure capable of delivering continuity of up-to-date information and, therefore, continuity of care.

Key Benefits
  • Increased staff collaboration, with Web access to email and common calendar information, enables them to book resources or meetings across all sites.
  • In 2003, it saved NZ $5milion across the board in operational costs and nearly $3 million in capital expenditure. In 2004, total operational savings were $7.6 million and a further $6.5 million was saved in capital expenditure.
  • The Microsoft security system surrounds the organisation, improving usability for staff with just a single sign-on name, enabling them to access information securely from any PC on the network at any location.
  • A single operating system on the desktop enables IT staff to rebuild or upgrade workstations with minimal user intervention; they can also manage the look and feel of the desktop centrally and assist users remotely.

Key Microsoft Technologies

"In a way, this hasn't been a technology project. First and foremost, it is a business project that is about reducing costs and improving reliability through Microsoft technologies. The bonus for us is that the technology benefits have also made quite
an impact on the organisation."
