Increasing the Effectiveness of Skilled WorkersIncreasing the Effectiveness of Skilled Workers

Microsoft Smart Client and device technologies can help transform the way healthcare workers go about their daily tasks and reduce their administrative burden. As a result, not only can they be far more productive and efficient during their working hours, but also, they have more time to spend delivering care.

  • Microsoft Business Intelligence enables administrators to gain a complete understanding of immediate staffing requirements and long-term trends so that they can deploy staff efficiently and forecast needs.
  • Microsoft mobile and communication technologies enable flexible working practices so that staff can offer community and home-based care and practitioners can work more effectively from wherever they choose.

Case study

The Royal District Nursing Service in Melbourne has provided over 500 nurses with Tablet PCs to carry out real-time searches on patient histories and check past treatment methods while with the patient, enabling them to deliver an extra 2,500 hours of care per week.

The GPRS capabilities enable nurses to start work from home each day, dialling in and collecting information, sending emails and receiving updates. They simply turn on the device, enter their login details and the server downloads their schedule, including details of which shift they are working, the geographical area and client information. During the day, nurses view patient records and enter details about actions and procedures carried out on site as well as their travel details. This information is then uploaded to the head office.

Key Benefits
  • Removing the need to commute to and from the office at the beginning and the end of each day has vastly increased the amount of time available to spend with patients.
  • Real-time direct data entry and retrieval improves data integrity and administrative efficiency while reducing paper trails.
  • Access 24/7, simplicity and ease of use have made the administrative side of the job far easier.

Key Microsoft Technologies
Tablet PCs run Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Office XP (US Links)
The system is designed to enable constant connectivity via either a wireless LAN in the building or GPRS at other times. This mobile technology delivers everything nurses had in the office, but now they can do it in the field.

"Nurses are able to sit with patients and hold it (the Tablet PC) just like a clipboard, jotting notes using a stylus and touchscreen."

Ian Cash, General Manager of Information Services, Royal District Nursing Service
