WorkVentures Group Levels the Playing Field for Computer Literacy

In the face of challenging economic times, improving computer literacy skills to secure employment becomes more critical, especially for financially, physically or socially disadvantaged Australians. Arsenio Alegre, Chief Executive Officer of WorkVentures Ltd, is committed to job creation and equal opportunities for all. Arsenio’s vision works in synergy with Microsoft’s own – and the two groups are working together to enable Australians to reach their full potential.

WorkVentures employs more than 150 people, in eight sites across Sydney and one in Melbourne, to provide disadvantaged job seekers with intensive assistance. The not-for-profit organisation works with Microsoft Australia to provide employment and learning services, electronic repairs, community development and computer refurbishment.

"At WorkVentures, we believe that everyone deserves to have access to computers and training regardless of their financial situation,” says Arsenio Alegre.

The Sydney ITeC Repair Centre is a high-volume electronic repair and recycling facility owned by WorkVentures and supports its computer refurbishment program, which uses software donated by Microsoft. The centre is a Microsoft Authorised Refurbisher.

Using the technology Microsoft provides, WorkVentures also conducts a variety of computer training. One program, which is supported by another partner, involves students attending a one week training course and upon passing an exam, they take a computer home to put their knowledge to practical use. After working on the computer for one month, students attend a further week of training. This program has already provided an opportunity for paid traineeships at the Sydney ITeC facility for two successful participants.

"It’s an incredible feeling being able to provide people with the skills they need to succeed. It’s even more special to see them rise above their situation and secure gainful employment," says Arsenio.
