Microsoft Store expands to Australia

6 October, 2009 | Sydney, Australia

Microsoft today announced the local availability of Microsoft Store, an online retail destination that offers Australians an easy way to purchase Microsoft's products. The online store will be operated by independent reseller and Microsoft Gold Certified Partner arvato digital services, which already operates Microsoft Store in France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain and the UK. Microsoft store is available to Australian customers at www.Microsoftstore.com.au.

Karl Miklis, Windows consumer product marketing manager, Microsoft Australia, said, "Most consumers will always want to visit bricks and mortar retail outlets for the benefit of in-person advice and services, and that will continue to be our primary sales channel."

"Additionally, there is a subset of consumers who have indicated they would like the choice to purchase software via downloads. Microsoft Store will offer an easy environment where Australians can download and buy Microsoft software online."

Initially, Microsoft Store will offer a selected range of Microsoft's productivity and design software packages, including Microsoft Office 2007, Visual Studio, OneNote and Project. Along with a fast, easy-to-use and secure buying experience, customers will be able to review useful product comparisons and download software via an electronic software delivery (ESD) platform. In addition, Microsoft Store will offer niche products not available at Australian in-store retail destinations, such as language packs for Microsoft software in nine languages including Greek, French, Chinese and Spanish, and individual programs such as stand-alone Excel, Word or PowerPoint.

The Microsoft Store will also offer Windows 7 to Australian customers from 22 October onwards. The store will enable customers to purchase or to upgrade their version of Windows 7 to one with higher functionality.
Microsoft Store is an expansion of the existing online channels in Australia. Microsoft Office has been available for direct download in Australia since April 2007 and Australian consumers are also able to purchase Xbox content via Xbox Live.

In addition to the stores operated by Arvato, Microsoft Store also operates in the following markets: India, Japan, Korea and the United States.
