SharePoint Patching: Notes from the Field
The aim of this session is to de-mystify and simplify the popular and often misunderstood subject of SharePoint Server patching. This session will discuss the various types of updates that are available and the release cycle for each type of update. It will then cover the recommended and tried and tested process for installing updates using an example customer to put the session into context, this will include pre-requisites that should be factored into any update plan, best practices and knowledge gained from working in the field that can be used to minimise risk and down time when updates are applied. It will also discuss some common mistakes that are made and how to put these right. The roadmap of updates released since service pack 1 will also be covered including approaches that can be used to streamline the update process when working with deployments that haven’t been kept up to date with the latest patches. The innards of an Office SharePoint server patch will be dissected and the typical components that are contained within a patch will be covered, this information is crucial when trying to gain an in-depth understanding of how the update mechanism works and how this has changed since the infrastructure update was released. This will then take the session onto its final topic which will discuss what to do when it all goes wrong using real-world issues experienced by Microsoft engineers working in the field.
