Total Workstation Lockdown: Your Action Plan

Total workstation lockdown isn't for every machine in your organization, but some machines require it. It's usually those "public walk up" machines that we need to manage a little bit differently; the machines that are in the cafeterias, the lobby and the library. The more we think about it, these kinds of machines are everywhere in our organization - inviting attack and ruining our day. Who knows what crazy things people are doing ON these machines - visiting strange web sites and installing evil software. The good news is that Microsoft has a slew of solutions to help you with this very specific problem. And it doesn't mean you need to turn the thumbscrews and go from 0 - 100% lockdown either. Microsoft has a variety of technologies you can choose (and mix and match) to make sure your workstations as locked down only as much as they need to be. In this session, Group Policy MVP Jeremy Moskowitz will demonstrate a myriad of ways to make your public desktops more secure. You will also learn about some non-Microsoft tools to help enhance your control of this notoriously difficult situation.

Jeremy Moskowitz, Group Policy MVP of GPanswers.com and author of ‘Group Policy Fundamentals, Security and the Managed Desktop’ is just the guy to bring you the know-how. In this session you’ll learn why you can no longer just run gpresult.exe to get the results you want. You’ll discover what happens if you reconnect to network after a long absence. You’ll learn how to crack open the Windows 7 event log and trace Group Policy flow to figure out what might be going on. You’ll learn how to troubleshoot the new Group Policy Preference Extensions. You’ll learn how other areas, such as Offline Files and Group Policy Software Installation, can be tweaked to give you just the information you need to fix what ails you. If you’re looking for Group Policy answers to your troubleshooting questions, this is the session for you.

Failover Clustering & Hyper-V: Multi-Site Disaster Recovery

As servers are consolidated into VMs, the availability of those VMs is becoming increasingly important, along with providing disaster tolerance and business continuity. This session covers considerations of multi-site clustering, where virtual machines can be configured on a Hyper-V Failover Cluster that spans across sites. Learn how to conduct live migrations across datacenters and considerations of Cluster Shared Volumes with replication software.

Failover Clustering & Hyper-V: Planning your Highly-Available Virtualization Environment

This technical session will discuss Hyper-V and Failover Clustering live migration, deployment considerations, licensing, upgrades, host clustering, guest clustering, disaster recovery, multi-site clustering, System Center Virtual Machine Manager, hardware and validation. What are the pros and cons of each virtualization? What's right for my customer and their scenarios? What about combining physical and virtual machines in the same cluster? This session will include a live demo setting up a Hyper-V Cluster and performing a live migration from scratch.

Best Practices in Virtualizing Remote Desktop Services and Virtual Desktops: THE Virtual Reality Check

In this energetic session, Jeroen van de Kamp and Ruben Spruijt will present all the important results and best practices for Virtualizing Desktop (VDI) and Remote Desktop Services (former Terminal Server) workloads, found in Project: “Virtual Reality Check”. This unbiased and independent R&D project started early 2009, and involved more than 850 tests. The goal of Project VRC is to analyze the developments in the Application and Desktop Virtualization market, and present the results in a unbiased and independent way. If you are looking for independent advice and a ‘Reality Check’ in relation to Virtualizing Desktop workloads … if you are searching for best practices for your Virtual Desktops … this is the presentation you must attend!

Managing the User Experience Across Physical and Virtual Environments

As enterprises turn to virtualization, in all its forms, users begin to “roam” in ways we never imagined just a few years ago. Even if a user sits at a single physical device, their experience stretches across remote desktop sessions, virtual machines, and virtualized applications. In order to maintain, let alone improve, productivity you must ensure a consistent, manageable and supportable workspace for your users. The pieces are all there: folder redirection, user profiles, group policy, ACLs, encryption, and DFS. But the intricacies and interactions of these technologies are surprisingly complex, and until you start managing them, your IT service delivery will suffer. In this session, you will learn best practices for putting the pieces together. Participants are expected to have a solid understanding of most or all of these technologies or be ready to learn them offline. This advanced session prepares you to take away ready-to-implement, useful solutions to corralling, securing, and managing user data and settings in both physical and virtual environments.
