This talk presents a few canonical architectures that highlight interesting design decisions of a private cloud that are new in Windows Server 2012.

Hyper-V over SMB: Remote File Storage Support in Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V - Didier Van Hoye
In this session, we cover the Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V support for remote file storage using SMB 3.0. This introduces a new first-class storage option for Hyper-V that is a flexible, easy to use and cost-effective alternative to block storage. We detail the basic requirements for Hyper-V over SMB and outline the specific enhancements to SMB 3.0 to support server application storage, including SMB Transparent Failover, SMB Scale-Out, SMB Multichannel, SMB Direct (SMB over RDMA), SMB Encryption, SMB PowerShell, SMB performance counters and VSS for SMB File Shares. We conclude with a few suggested configurations for Hyper-V over SMB, including both standalone and clustered options.

Active Directory Virtualization Safeguards and Domain Controller Cloning with Windows Server 2012 - Paul Loonen
Virtualization is a key technology underpinning and enabling both private- and public-cloud deployments. In this session, we will discuss the technical details surrounding domain controller virtualization safeguards in Windows Server 2012 that prevent certain Hypervisor capabilities (when used with virtualized domain controllers) from disrupting the Active Directory system and potentially introducing a permanently divergent state. Beyond simply making virtualized domain controllers safer, Windows Server 2012 also more fully exploits the capabilities of Hypervisors by enabling the rapid deployment of replica DCs through virtual disk cloning—cloning largely requiring only a simple file-copy of the virtual domain controller’s virtual disk file (VHD) and the creation of basic configuration instructions. The ability to clone virtual domain controllers takes Active Directory’s support for virtualization to the next level enabling rapid deployment of greenfield Active Directory environments and significantly reducing scale-out and disaster recovery time.
