Overview
The Base ImageX Server is a virtual machine that can be hosted in Hyper-V that allows a user to test out the latest Business Intelligence features of SQL Server 2012. The virtual machine has been configured to support the use of PowerView reports, PowerPivot Excel documents and various content packs allowing the user to explore the capabilities of SQL Server 2012. Working with the demos that can be installed on the ImageX server the user will have a clear picture of how the SQL Server 2012, Office and SharePoint tools support and enhance the self-service business intelligence environment.
System Requirements
Supported Operating Systems:
  • Windows Server 2008 SP2 with Hyper-V Role installed
  • 8GB ram allocated to the BI ImageX VM
  • Minimum 80GB hard drive space – 250GB recommended
  • Minimum 1 Virtual Processor allocated to the BI ImageX VM – 2-4
  • Processors Recommended
Easy steps to set up the BI Demo Image on your own local server:
  1. Ensure you meet the system requirements
  2. Download the file
  3. Follow the detailed instructions to unpack and set up the BI Demo locally

Prepare the Host Server
The ImageX VM requires an internal network setup on the host server. If not already done so, complete the following steps.
  1. On the host server, click Start -> Administrative Tools -> Hyper-V Manager
  2. Right click on the Host Server name in the left panel and select Virtual Network
  3. Manager…
  4. Make sure New Virtual Network is selected on the left
  5. Select Internal in the list box on the right and click the Add button
  6. In the Name field enter “Intranet”
  7. Make sure the Internal only radio button is selected
  8. Click OK
  9. Click Start -> Control Panel
  10. Select Network and Internet
  11. Select Network and Sharing Center
  12. Click Change adapter settings on the left side
  13. Locate the newly added network adapter, called Intranet
  14. Right click on the adapter and select properties
  15. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties
  16. Select the Use the following IP address radio button and enter the following parameters:
    • IP Address: 192.168.150.150
    • Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    • Default Gateway: 192.168.150.1
  17. Select the Use the following DNS Server addresses radio button and enter the following parameter:
    • Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.150.1
  18. Exit out of the control panel settings

Validate the Network Settings in ImageX
  1. Double click on the ImageX Server in Hyper-V to open it
  2. Click Start -> Control Panel
  3. Select Network and Internet
  4. Select Network and Sharing Center
  5. Click Change adapter settings on the left side
  6. Right click on the network adapter and select Properties
  7. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties
  8. Validate and/or correct for the following settings:
    • IP Address: 192.168.150.1
    • Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    • Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.150.1
To Rearm the ImageX Operating System
  1. Locate the ImageX-System-Rearm.ps1 script on the ImageX desktop
  2. Right click on the script and select Run with PowerShell
  3. Enter a “Y” in the console to accept rearming the environment
  4. Wait for a dialog window stating the Command completed successfully. Click the OK button on the dialog window.
  5. Enter a “Y” to reboot the server in the console window

To Add an External Network
If you require the ability to access the internet from the ImageX server you will need to add an external network.
  1. On the host server, click Start -> Administrative Tools -> Hyper-V Manager
  2. Right click on the Host Server name in the left panel and select Virtual Network Manager…
  3. Make sure New Virtual Network is selected on the left
  4. Select External in the list box on the right and click the Add button
  5. In the Name field enter “External Network”
  6. Make sure the External radio button is selected
  7. Select a network card from the host machine in the drop down list box
  8. Click the OK button
  9. Shutdown the ImageX server if it is started, by either selecting Shutdown in the ImageX Server or by right clicking on the server in the VM list and selecting Shutdown…
  10. Right click on the ImageX Server in the VM list and select Settings
  11. Select Add Hardware in the left pane
  12. In the right pane, select Network Adapter and click the Add button
  13. In the Network drop down list select External Network
  14. Click the OK Button
  15. Restart the ImageX Server
  16. Logon to the server and validate that http://intranet.contoso.com opens correctly (it may take a few moments while the SharePoint site opens for the first time).
  17. Validate that you can open an external internet address like http://www.microsoft.com
