Microsoft Host Integration Server

Extending the reach of your Windows Investments: Interoperability with IBM Systems

Overview

Microsoft Host Integration Server technologies and tools enable enterprise organizations to integrate existing IBM host systems, programs, messages and data with new Microsoft server applications.

Most enterprise organizations seek to leverage past IT investments, including heritage host server systems that run important computing workloads and store valuable information.

A significant challenge to enterprise IT organizations is the need to continually re-invest in these heritage platforms, to extend these systems to new workloads, including: service-enablement, on-line transactions, messaging interchange, business intelligence, workflow and collaboration.

Microsoft recognizes the value of this investment in IBM host systems and offers technologies and tools for integrating these existing systems with new solutions based on devices, desktops, and servers running Microsoft Windows operating systems and application software. Retaining valued heritage investments and integrating these with new workloads, offers many benefits to enterprise IT.

New Host Integration Server 2010 Management Pack for System Center Operations Manager 2007

The Host Integration Server 2010 Management Pack for Systems Center Operations Manager 2007 provides the capabilities for Operations Manager to discover and monitor the availability of Host Integration Server 2010 server components and applications. It includes availability monitors for SNA Services (SNA Service, Host Print and TN Services), Application Integration, Data Integration, and Message Integration features. In addition to health monitoring capabilities, this management pack includes rules to generate alerts for critical conditions and views that enable near real-time diagnosis and resolution of detected issues.

Description

Easy and Affordable

Host Integration Server 2010 provides rapid, flexible deployment, with lower cost of ownership.  Enterprise IT can deploy solutions based on HIS clients and servers onto more Microsoft Windows platforms and server technologies, while connecting to the latest supported IBM systems.

Integrate with Host Programs

HIS Transaction Integrator (TI) provides tools for enterprise developers to generate .NET components, XML Web Services and WCF Services for integrating existing programs in IBM CICS, IMS, and i5/OS computers.  Visual design tools plug into Visual Studio 2008 to graphical mapping of host program inputs/outputs to .NET object interfaces, using optional COBOL and RPG source code import wizards.

Integrate with Host Sessions

HIS Session Integrator offers programming interfaces for COM or .NET to emulate and automate access to LU2 3270 and LU0 LUA based mainframe programs across a High Performance Routing over Internet Protocol (SNA over IP) network connection.  Also, Session Integrator can connect TN3270 over TCP/IP directly to the host.

Integrate with Host Messaging

Enterprise developers can integrate WebSphere MQ messaging with new solutions based on .NET Framework 4 using the HIS WCF Channel for WebSphere MQ.  HIS Message Integrator offers a VS designer plug-in to map MQ messages to .NET components, allowing runtime data conversion of the MQ data payload, while generating code that wraps the WCF channel as a directly callable .NET component or WCF Service.

Integrate with Host Data

Host Integration Server supports remote DRDA client access to DB2.  Managed ADO.NET Data Provider for DB2 relies on the DB2 network client to enable Visual Studio 2010 to generate new programs using the VS Server Explorer, Query Builder and DataSet Designer.  Entity Provider for DB2 is built on the foundation of the Managed Provider for DB2 and enables developers to integrate DB2 databases with the ADO.NET Entity Framework, for creating entity-enabled applications using Workflow Foundation or publishing AJAX web services.
Managed ADO.NET Data Provider for Host Files relies on the HIS DOM client to access datasets on z/OS or i5/OS, with built-in code page and data type conversions, from Visual Studio 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2, using VS Server Explorer, Query Builder, and DataSet Designer, in connected mode and off-line host file binary reader/writer mode.

Network Integration and Consolidation

HIS network integration services connect Windows client, server, and device software to existing IBM mainframe and midrange host systems, enabling IT professionals to consolidate network infrastructure and reduce operating costs.  SNA Services operate as a gateway function, supporting common logical unit types (LU0, LU1, LU2, LU3, and LU6.2), connecting to host systems across an SNA Advanced Peer to Peer Network (APPN) or as Branch Network node using modern High Performance Routing over Internet Protocol (HPR/IP).

Secure Host Connectivity and Identity Management

Host Integration Server 2010 offers Enterprise Single Sign-On (ESSO), a set of technologies and tools for defining, storing and retrieving mappings between Microsoft Windows Active Directory® and foreign credentials.  Enterprise Single Sign-On supports popular mainframe and midrange security systems including IBM RACF (Resource Access Control Facility) for z/OS, Computer Associates eTrust CA-ACF2 Security for z/OS, Computer Associates eTrust CA-Top Secret Security for z/OS and IBM i5/OS V5R4 and i5/OS V6R1.
