Connect your stereo speakers to your Media Center PC

Media Center PC with stereo speakers attached
Enjoy the great sound of your stereo speakers on your PC running Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. Follow these steps to connect your Media Center PC to your stereo system.

Step 1: Connect the receiver

For stereo sound, you need only one cable to connect your Media Center PC to your receiver—a 1/8-inch or 3.5-millimeter stereo-mini-to-stereo-RCA cable.

  1. Connect the stereo-mini plug to your PC’s sound output port (this port could be either the line out jack or the headphone jack).
  2. Connect the stereo RCA plugs to the CD input ports on your receiver. Make sure that you connect the left and right channels correctly.
  3. On your receiver, change the input to CD.

Step 2: Configure the decoder software

Next, change the decoder software settings on your Media Center PC to reflect your new speaker setup and to reflect that the speakers are connected through a receiver.

The following example demonstrates the selections you would make for the Nvidia NVDVD decoder. Your Media Center PC may have a different decoder installed, so the options may differ slightly. You can view a list of decoders that are designed for Media Center PCs on the Designed for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Logo Partner List Web page.
  1. To access the decoder settings, use your mouse to open Media Center. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, and then click Media Center.
  2. On the Media Center Start menu, click Settings, click DVD, and then click Audio.
  3. DVD menu with Audio selected
  4. The decoder properties dialog box is displayed. If the Not Designed For Media Center dialog box is displayed, click View Now to view the decoder properties dialog box.
  5. On the Audio menu, click Speaker Setup.
  6. In the Speaker Setup dialog box, select the following options:

    • In the Connected to section, select a receiver.
    • In the Speaker Sizes section, click Large in the Front list, click None in the Center list, and then click None in the Back list.
    • Speaker Setup dialog box with a receiver selected
    • If you have a 2.1 configuration that includes a subwoofer, select the Subwoofer check box.
    • Speaker Setup dialog box with the Subwoofer check box selected
    • Click OK to close the Speaker Setup dialog box.
    • Click OK to close the decoder properties dialog box and save your changes.

Step 3: Complete the Speaker Setup Wizard in Media Center

To complete the Speaker Setup Wizard:
  1. Press the Green Start Button on your remote to open the Media Center Start menu.
  2. Select Settings, select General, select Media Center Setup, and then select Set Up Your Speakers.
  3. In the Speaker Setup Wizard, on the Choose number of Speakers page, select 2 speakers, and then select Next. Select 2 speakers whether you have a 2.0 or a 2.1 speaker configuration (2.1 includes a subwoofer).
  4. Choose number of Speakers page with 2 speakers selected
  5. On the Test page, select Test to play an audio test file, and make sure that everything is set up correctly. The sound should travel from the right speaker to the left speaker. If the sound travels in the opposite direction, the connections to your receiver are crossed. Just swap the left and right RCA connectors, and test it again.
  6. After you successfully complete the test, select Next, and then select Finish to close the Speaker Setup Wizard.
Now you can enjoy the sound quality of your stereo speakers through your Media Center PC.
