Answers to frequently asked questions about the Hardware Compatibility List

Q  If a specific model doesn't appear in the list, does that mean it will not work with my Microsoft software?

No, it only means that the manufacturer of the device has not submitted test results to Microsoft. Many devices not included in the list will actually work with Microsoft Dynamics RMS or Microsoft Point of Sale. If you want testimonials about the performance of a device, you can visit the newsgroup to consult with peers and partners about their experiences.

Q  The type of device I am interested in is not listed. Why not?

The Retail Hardware Compatibility List is undergoing improvement. Check back later to see information for additional device types.

Q  Does Microsoft guarantee the performance of each device on the list?

The hardware manufacturer is solely responsible for the device listing and performance. If you have problems with a listed device, contact the device manufacturer for assistance.

Q  What is the compatibility testing process?

First, the manufacturer requests an evaluation copy of Microsoft Dynamics RMS. This evaluation copy is accompanied by a document which outlines the testing that Microsoft requires for each type of device. After installing the device and Microsoft Dynamics RMS, the manufacturer performs tests of some basic functionality. When testing is complete, the manufacturer reports to Microsoft that the device passed all tests, and then Microsoft adds the device to the hardware compatibility list..

Q  Why do some devices appear more than once?

Manufacturers submit their devices for each operating system where they are supported. At this time, a device appears once for each supported platform. Microsoft is working to improve the list both to include this information and to display each device only once.
