Barry Briggs


Barry Briggs is Chief Architect and CTO for Microsoft’s IT organization, serving one of the world’s largest and most influential technology companies. Among other key initiatives, he drives building and adoption of Master Data Management (MDM) and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) solutions for the company. Previously at Microsoft he served as senior architect in the Business Process and Integration Division at Microsoft, where he helped set the technology strategy for Microsoft’s enterprise integration and business process product line. Barry’s twenty-seven-year career in the software industry includes eleven years at Lotus/IBM where he led the development of the company’s best-selling spreadsheet program and was named the company’s first Lotus Fellow.

After Lotus/IBM, Barry held a number of senior executive positions serving as CTO for a number of successful software vendors. Well known in the industry (called “one of the better known CTO’s in the world” by InfoWorld in 2001), Barry speaks frequently at industry events. Richard Cleaver


As the chief architect at BMO Financial Group, Richard Cleaver is responsible for the creation of enterprise architecture technology strategies to support the Bank’s various lines of business, the development of technology principles, standards and statements of direction to guide the evolution of the Bank’s technology environment and the provision of technology consulting and guidance to the Technology and Operations group in support of project deliveries. The enterprise architecture function is responsible to provide the enterprise technology, data and application architectures for BMO Financial Group and to ensure compliance by projects to the enterprise architecture.

He has overall responsibility to ensure that technology planning and IT strategies performed across the enterprise enable the business through a cost-effective and responsive enterprise architecture framework. This framework articulates current state, target state and migration paths for key components of the Bank’s technical environment in support of business goals and objectives.

Richard Cleaver joined the Bank in 1999 as Vice President Enterprise Architecture. Prior to his current role, he was Vice President, Enterprise Technologies for the London Life Insurance Company. He is an experienced executive in Information Technology with over 20 years in senior technology leadership roles in the financial services industry.

Gary Doucet


Gary Doucet is the Chief Architect for the Government of Canada. Leading the Enterprise Architecture and Standards Division (EASD) within the Chief Information Office (CIO) Branch of the Treasury Board Secretariat, he is responsible for the advancing Enterprise Architecture (EA) within the Federal Government.

The goal for EA is to achieve ‘Coherent Government by Design’, which is an idea that extends the use of EA from aligning business and IT to a broader mandate of aligning the whole enterprise. To achieve this, Gary and his team are actively developing tools and techniques to bring alignment to everything from business plans and financial documents to technical solutions.

To support this innovative approach to EA, the Government of Canada has been working with all provinces and municipal associations to develop the Governments of Canada Strategic Reference Model (GSRM). The GSRM is a standard language used to describe programs, services, processes and resources for all governments in Canada. In addition, Gary leads the development and support of business transformation tools and methods. Used properly, such tools will help reduce the cost of government and deliver more client-centric services.

Gary came to the Government of Canada from CGI, a leading provider of end-to-end information technology and business process services, where he was a Director of Consulting Services and instituted a Solutions Management Office to ensure a consistent approach to solutions across their client engagements.

Currently, Gary is the vice-president of the Association of Enterprise Architects, and the former President of the Canadian chapter. He is also Head of Delegation for Canada at UN/CEFACT (United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business) where he works with other countries on standards for trade and business groups.

For over 20 years Gary has been hands-on across the disciplines of Systems Development, Architecture, Engineering, and Management. He has been a part-time instructor of technology for several years, and holds a BSc(CS) from the University of New Brunswick.

Lewis Curtis


Lewis is an senior infrastructure architect on corporate assignment to the DPE platform architecture team to lead field research of environmentally sustainable architecture best practices inside and outside of Microsoft. While researching field designs, he has published articles with Microsoft as well as IEEE for Environmental Sustainability.

Previously, Lewis pioneered the work on the Perspective Based Architecture (www.perspectivebasedarchitecture.com) and published a PBA article for the Architecture Journal worked with IASA International Association of Software Architects). Working with Microsoft to develop and refine a senior vendor neutral architect certification, Lewis is on the Microsoft Certified Architect board of advisors for the Microsoft Certified Architect program.

Before, Microsoft, Lewis worked for Sun Microsystems for five years in the advanced internet practice for large scale data center architectures, as well as worked for Digital Equipment Corporation. Before Digital, Lewis designed analytical IT solutions for BFI recycling centers. He is the co-author of one book, multiple papers and is a Microsoft Certified Architect: Infrastructure.

Stephen Ibaraki


Stephen Ibaraki, FCIPS, I.S.P., MVP, DFNPA , is a past multi-award-winning college computing head teaching business and technology and he has worked as a senior executive/author/advisor/company founder in every facet of the IT industry since the 1970s’. Stephen is an advisor to Mckinsey, Gerson Lehrman Group, Society of Industry Leaders Vista Research Group (a unit of Standards and Poors) among many others; and a 35+-year veteran of business and Information Technology. Due to his international standing in business and technology, Stephen serves as Judge for many organizations including: on the Canadian Business Magazine All-Star Executive panel which identifies yearly the top executives in Canada; for the MSDN Code Awards that recognizes the top development teams and individuals. For his lifetime industry and technology outstanding contributions: Stephen is a founding Fellow and Distinguished Fellow; inductee into the IT Hall of Fame; the ICT Industry’s sole recipient of the Computing Canada IT Leadership Lifetime Achievement Award, the first and only international recipient of the global Career Achievement Professionalism Award given out at the Interop Conference in Las Vegas; the inaugural recipient of the Industry Canada and Information Technology Association of Canada IT Hero Award; the recipient of the national Gary Hadford Professional Achievement Award; multiple teaching awards; and many more recognitions. Stephen is also a keynote speaker at enterprise conferences in Europe and in North America and a Gerson Lehrman Group Scholar, a special recognition for top-ranking international experts. As a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors, Stephen holds a variety of corporate board positions including as chief strategist and board chair. Stephen also has a long history of entrepreneurship. As a recent example, in 2005, he authored the business plan of a Web 2.0 company holding No.1 position in an international market.

Stephen’s articles, webcasts, e-books, podcasts, interviews appear worldwide and he is regularly interviewed due to his recognized leadership. For example, his 2007 thought piece on business planning appeared internationally before 250,000 readers. Stephen can be found blogging regularly for the IT Manager Connection blog where he serves as co-host; ranked in the top 10% of technet blog properties worldwide in its first year of operation. In 2007, Stephen was the keynote speaker for a country-wide IT Executive Alignment Tour ’07 hosted by Microsoft where he spoke on IT as a Strategic Asset and Aligning Information Technology with Business Performance to support Business Strategy. As noted at the Global MVP Summit Pressroom, “Ibaraki is serving as a keynote speaker” and “As a result of his award-winning international leadership profile.” In the fall of 2007, Stephen was invited, due to his international expert profile as a consultant and entrepreneur, to the highly successful and interactive MSDN and Technet Webcast series, “Ignite Your Career.” Earlier, invited by Smartforce as a world-renowned international leader, he led more than 15 interactive international webcasts that went to the Fortune 2500 companies and 5 million IT practitioners. Norm Judah


Norm Judah returned to Microsoft Services as CTO of Worldwide Services, focusing on technology management and enterprise service strategy. His approach to Services is to act as the technical conscience and leader, ensuring technical excellence across the entire solution cycle. Driving technical process and major design reviews, Judah champions technical approaches and methods that reduce risk and assure high quality on-time delivery, while keeping the technical community fresh and on the leading edge. In addition, Norm drives frequent, measurable, innovative and high quality product feedback to the appropriate product groups.

Prior to his current role, Norm played a key part in the newly formed Platforms, Technology and Strategy group, reporting into the CTO-Business Platforms. He held the title of Corporate Vice President of Business Development, responsible for the incubation, development and delivery of Web Services such as UDDI, and the integration of the .NET platform through managing strategic partnerships with providers and consumers of business applications. This included managing the relationships with key partners, e.g. SAP, as well as strategic customer projects.

As Vice President of Business Development, Judah also engaged in the establishment of the Business Applications division, and the acquisition of Great Plains Software. Previously he was Director of Enterprise Program Management in the developer division and General Manager of the enterprise connectivity group, managing several product groups, including the host integration and repository product units.

Judah also worked closely with IT departments both internally and with customers. As Director of Core Technology for Microsoft’s Information Technology Group, he was responsible for the delivery of Microsoft’s internal IT infrastructure and business applications. When he joined Microsoft in1990, Judah was part of the startup team for Microsoft Consulting Services where he became Director of Technology. His group was responsible for providing architectural guidance, tools, methodologies, technical training and quality programs to the worldwide Microsoft consulting practices.

Prior to joining Microsoft in 1990, Judah worked for Imperial Oil Limited, the Canadian affiliate of Exxon Corp., where he architected and developed leading edge transaction processing systems and real-time distributed systems.

Collectively, he has more than 25 years of experience in the systems industry, most of which has been spent trying to simplify and streamline the way business applications are built through well defined application architectures. This is fueled by a passion to drive product planning based on working closely with customers and their applications.

Judah holds a Masters of Applied Science from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Witwatersrand.

Par Singh


Parminder (Par) Singh is the Managing Director of the Microsoft Canada Development Centre (MCDC), located in Richmond, British Columbia. In his role since September, 2007, Par is responsible for the overall management of the MCDC, as well as establishing the strategic direction for the Centre. The MCDC is in its early stages of growth. It is expected to be one of the premier locations for the development as part of Microsoft’s Global Distributed Development Strategy.

Par has more than 22 years of professional experience in building, operating, and managing international businesses for private companies, government clients, and multi-national corporations around the world. Most recently, Par was the founder and CEO of Evenio Media, where he directed the software design and development of an award winning multimedia publishing platform. Prior to that, Par was the Vice Pesident of World Wide Market Development at Ensequence, where he was responsible for sales, marketing, and business development of Ensequence’s Interactive Television publishing platform. Prior to Ensequence, Par spent 4 years with Microsoft. While there, Par served as the Director of Business Development for Xbox where he provided strategic direction, developed go-to-market and pricing strategies, and led negotiations with major manufacturing and content partners. He also served as the General Manager for Xbox in Japan.

Before joining Microsoft, Par held executive positions at companies in Canada and US including: Telesat Canada, Motorola, Teledesic, FreeInternet Networks, and 5th Link Software. Additionally, he has consulted for numerous companies including: Boeing, Acer, ATT, Flextronics, Wistron, Hughes Aircraft Company, Space Systems/Loral, Nortel, and Bell Northern Research. With extensive international business and management experience, Par often speaks at industry conferences and at university forums. Par holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Nova Scotia. Par is married with two children, two dogs, and an occasional goldfish. He enjoys woodworking, badminton and basketball.

Mark Relph


As Vice President of the Developer & Platform (DPE) Group in Canada, Mark Relph is focused on the evangelism of the Microsoft® platform to developers, IT professionals, designers and ISVs. The Developer & Platform Group helps Microsoft drive the early adoption of emerging elements of the Microsoft® platform and builds a robust set technical community engagement programs such as MSDN and TechNet. Mark’s team also has a focus on enhancing the ecosystem of independent software vendors in Canada, including working with startups and the venture capital community. Finally, Mark’s group works with students and technology enthusiasts across Canada.

Mark has held positions in several different parts of Microsoft Canada. Prior to his current position, Mark was the Group Manager of the Developer Evangelism Team within the Developer & Platform Evangelism Group. Before moving to DPE, Mark was the Manager of the NSP Solutions and Technology Team. He led a sales team focused on building .NET services in conjunction with Service Providers such as telecommunications and wireless providers. Prior to that Mark was a Business Development Manager working with Canadian technology startups and venture capital firms. While with the E-Commerce Business Development team, he was responsible for working with enterprise accounts, such as, Future Shop, Radio Shack and Chapters.ca, to help them deploy their businesses online. Mark originally joined Microsoft as a Technology Specialist.

Before joining Microsoft in May 1998, Mark was a Systems Engineer at Digital Equipment specializing in development of Microsoft solutions.

Peter van der Zouwe


Peter van der Zouwe has worked in the IT Industry for 14 years. He has worked for Dell Computer in a variety of Sales and International Product Marketing roles, and for the past 8 years has worked for Microsoft.

Peter started with Microsoft New Zealand as a business development manager working with Internet Start up’s and Web Developers and since then has worked in a variety of Business Development, Sales and Management positions.

Peter spent 5 years working for the Microsoft Communication Sector team including 2 years as the NZ Team Lead. He has also managed Enterprise Sales Teams that cover a wide variety of industries including Financial Services, Public Sector, Manufacturing, Transportation and Forestry.

Peter also has a lot of international business experience having worked in Australia, Ireland, the UK, New Zealand (his home country) and now Canada.
