Dear Valued Customer,
As the new Director of the Communications Sector for Microsoft Canada,
I am excited to welcome you to the Fall 2007 issue of the Canadian
Connections newsletter. Taking over the reins from my predecessor,
Michael Weening, who has moved on to lead the Communications Sector in
the United Kingdom, I am looking forward to sharing with you my perspectives
on current and future trends in the communications space.
Over the last decade, convergence has been the buzz word for
the industry. Today, we see convergence entering a new phase - often
referred to as Telco 2.0 – where conventional telecommunications
offerings merge with technologies from the Web 2.0 community to form a
virtually endless array of innovative new services and mashups. Not
only has convergence finally entered the mainstream, the communication
business models that were once effective are becoming outdated and
recast with lightning speed.

As we continue to move forward, we are eager to hear your thoughts
on the Canadian Connections newsletter and invite you to participate in
this month’s reader survey. As
always, we encourage your ideas and suggestions about what you want to
see in upcoming issues. We look forward to receiving your feedback.
Best Regards,

Sean Seaton
Director, Communications Sector

A Word from...J Arnold & Associates
Telco
2.0 – Easier Said Than Done
By Jon Arnold
IP is the
foundation of what we call ‘Telco 2.0’ – the concept of integrating
voice into other applications to enrich the end-user’s communication
experience. The good news is that with IP, anyone can deliver Telco
2.0. The bad news is that with IP, anyone can deliver Telco 2.0. For
service providers with existing subscriber bases, the key will be
understanding what customers really value and finding ways to deliver.
If not, they will quickly be reduced to connectivity providers, while
the real money is made by the content providers delivering services on
top of their networks.
Conversely,
operators without subscriber bases can develop their own Telco 2.0
offerings and enter the market to challenge the incumbents. With
broadband becoming readily available, there are endless opportunities
for anyone with good technology to be creative and devise combinations
of services that are just right for a given customer set. In this
regard, successful Telco 2.0 providers will simply be those that can
deliver services at a low cost per bit as well as generate a high price
per bit from subscribers.
This seems like
an easy formula for success, but in reality it is very difficult to
achieve.

Portuguese Television Station Speeds Up Global News Reporting with
Collaboration Tool
Sociedade
Independente de Comunicaçao (SIC) operates terrestrial, satellite, and
cable TV channels, offering news and programming for women and youth.
It also runs an international channel that broadcasts in Europe,
Africa, North and South America, and Australia. SIC editors work with
journalists who file news reports globally. The increasingly
competitive global media industry requires that editors and reporters
be able to contact one another, as well as transmit data and graphics,
quickly and reliably. To improve communications, SIC deployed
Microsoft® Exchange Server 2007 with Unified Messaging. Now users
receive e-mail messages, faxes, and voice mail in a single integrated
inbox. Solution benefits include faster access to colleagues, more
flexibility in storage of digital media, and a single point of contact
for technical support.

T-Com
Improves Service Using Microsoft Customer Care Framework
T-Com is a
leading provider of Internet, telephony, and IP services to customers
throughout Croatia. Its customer contact centre is the largest of its
kind in Croatia, and employees field hundreds of customer enquiries
every day. Until recently, each request involved accessing as many as
10 different applications to get the information required for
customers. T-Com worked with Microsoft® Services to implement the
Microsoft Customer Care Framework, which integrated all of its
applications into an easy-to-use agent desktop application, helping
them deliver better customer service and develop new business
initiatives.

France
Telecom Gains Mobile Productivity and Efficiency with Exchange Server
2007
The France
Telecom Group, a global telecommunications giant, wanted to integrate
voice, fax, and e-mail data for traveling executives—both internal
employees and customers of its Orange Business Services brand. In an
increasingly mobile world, France Telecom believed that a messaging
solution needed rich support for Web and voice access, while optimizing
data security and cutting costs. To accomplish these goals, France
Telecom implemented Microsoft® Exchange Server 2007. Internal users
have increased their productivity by receiving unified messages through
either a voice or Web interface. And by using Microsoft Office Outlook®
Web Access, they can quickly and securely download documents anywhere.
Meanwhile, IT administrators can perform common tasks with a few
command lines, while maximizing efficiency through the software’s
flexible configuration.
