Strong ties between industry and the academic community are essential to ensuring continued innovation in the technologies that are brought to market. With the creation of the Microsoft Canada Academic Innovation Alliance, the company has established a collaborative framework and funding initiative to extend the reach of technology teaching and research to Canadian industry.
The fund, to be administered over a five-year period, will enable research and development and stimulate innovation, as well as facilitate collaboration and sharing of best practices between the academic and business communities. As individual recipients of the fund, universities may also be eligible for federal matching programs.
Projects considered for funding must address at least one of four categories, which were selected in collaboration with the academic community to achieve common goals: Academic Research, Education Solutions, Curriculum Integration and Industry Outreach.

Academic Research
Encourage innovation in the academic research community, and create synergies between this community and industry in order to share developments in technology and research.
Education Solutions
Employ new technologies to deliver unprecedented access to course materials. Increase interaction between students and faculty from local and distant communities.
Curriculum Integration
Create, teach and share curriculum material focused on new technologies.
Industry Outreach
Provide academic testimony and training to industry on the use and application of new technologies.
