Five years ago, Microsoft made a commitment to make secure and reliable products and services to help protect customers’ privacy, and to be more transparent and responsive in business practices. We call this Trustworthy Computing and it infuses everything we do. There are 4 pillars to Trustworthy Computing:
- Security: The security of customers' computers and networks is a top priority, and Microsoft is committed to building software and services to better help protect customers and the industry. Microsoft’s approach to security includes both technological and social aspects.
- Privacy: Microsoft believes that people have the right to not receive unwanted communications. Microsoft also believes that people need to be able to trust that their personal information is used appropriately — and that any use of that information provides specific value to them.
- Reliability: Microsoft is committed to improving the quality of the technologies, products and processes that customers need for systems that are reliable and that perform as intended and expected.
- Business Practices: Microsoft strives to maintain the highest standards in business conduct, to ensure integrity and transparency in all business practices, and to address society's ethical, legal and commercial expectations.
Security is Paramount at Microsoft
To help solve security issues, it’s important that the computer industry and others work together. Collaboratively, we can locate vulnerabilities, address issues as they arise, and establish best practices. Microsoft works with technology partners and the following organizations, among others:
- Software vendors
- The research community
- Security companies
- Law enforcement agencies worldwide to help find and catch individuals who write and distribute malicious software
In the Microsoft workplace, Microsoft infused the software development process with a Security Development Lifecycle (SDL), a development practice that helps developers and engineers develop secure technologies. Windows Vista is the first Windows operating system built end-to-end under the SDL and, as such, it is the most secure and privacy-enhancing operating system Microsoft has ever shipped.
