Make a magnetic holiday card

Make a magnetic holiday card

Let your holiday greetings stick around all year long

The holiday season is all about sharing recent photos and greetings with family and friends. This year, create a family memory that will stick around long past the holidays.

A seasonal salutation in the form of a magnet is a great way to ensure your greetings find a place of prominence on the refrigerator. The best part is that these magnets can be made just as easily as cards, as magnet paper can run through your printer. Follow our instructions to create memorable holiday magnets of favourite family photos or events — it might become an annual tradition!

Supplies

  • magnet paper (available at your local office supply store)
  • utility knife or scissors
  • photo-mounting corners or two-way photo tape (available at office supply stores)
  • family photo
  • cardstock
  • printer

Step 1: Size your photo

Open your digital photo in Word. Resize it to 3½ inches by 2 inches and save. Open our magnetic card template and follow the instructions to replace our images with your own. Our images are set up to print business-card size. If you’d like your magnetic cards to be bigger, open a new Word document, insert your image, size it accordingly, then copy and paste it until you fill an entire sheet of 8½- by 11-inch magnet paper.

Step 2: Add decorative touches

Once your photos have been inserted, you can add a fun holiday border or frame to each image. Select a Clip Art frame, set the frame to Text Wrapping > In Front of Text and size accordingly (make sure the photo is not selected, otherwise the frame will replace it). Copy and paste as many times as needed. Remember that the magnet will be on the recipient's fridge all year round, so you may want a neutral border. You can also keep the magnet plain and add decorations to the card itself.

Step 3: Print your magnetic greeting

Always test your document on plain paper to make sure colours and alignment are correct. Insert the magnet paper and print. Using a sharp utility knife cut out each image. (If using business card size images, you can purchase perforated magnet sheets, such as Avery Magnetic Business Cards, to avoid the hassle of cutting.)

Affix the magnet to the front of your holiday card with photo-mounting corners or two-way tape. (To save time, buy cards with photo corners already in place. They can still be run through a printer to include a printed holiday greeting inside.) Add trimmings like bows or stickers, write a holiday message on the inside of the card and send. Or, download our snowflake card holder, lace with curling ribbon and affix the magnetic photo to the inside back of the card.
