Microsoft Canada supports Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence winners

OTTAWA, ON, May 15, 2003 — Microsoft Canada Co. today joined Prime Minister Jean Chrétien at a gala event on Parliament Hill to honour the national winners of the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence. The 2003 Award recognizes exemplary teachers across all disciplines, who provide students with the tools to become good citizens, develop and grow as individuals, and contribute to Canada's growth, prosperity and well-being.

The Prime Minister’s Award will be given to 72 teachers including 16 who will be awarded the national Certificate of Excellence distinction. Recipients teach a range of subjects, with many using information and communications technology to enhance their teaching.

“Today’s students must be prepared to succeed in a rapidly evolving knowledge-based economy; in a future we can only partially imagine,” said Frank Clegg, President of Microsoft Canada. “The teachers honoured today are up to the task. They are true innovators, helping foster excellence in Canadian classrooms.”

Initiated in 1993 by Industry Canada, the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence is both a successful outreach program and a prestigious private and pubic sector designation recognizing educators for their determination in fostering a dynamic learning environment.

This is the fourth year that Microsoft Canada has participated as a corporate contributor to the Awards.

As a leading supplier of technology for education, Microsoft believes that learning should take place anywhere and any time. In order to ensure that Canada continues to compete and excel in the global digital economy, all children require access to the latest technologies in the classroom. Through targeted education initiatives such as teacher training programs, Microsoft helps ensure that educators are able to offer the best tools to all students.

“Microsoft Canada is pleased to continue to support these and all outstanding teachers,” said Janice Keay, Education Marketing Manager at Microsoft Canada. “Microsoft applauds their creativity and forward-thinking methods and is dedicated to helping our educators build modern learning environments for all students across Canada.”

Through its Mentor Program, Microsoft Canada’s national teacher training initiative aims to develop and enhance the computer skills of over 8,000 K-12 educators across the country. Microsoft aids teachers in developing skills such as designing course websites, grading projects online and keeping parents up to date on their child’s progress via e-mail and collaborates with a number of industry players in order to help Canadian teachers get comfortable with classroom technologies.
