When talking about technology, it's all too easy to simply call out "laundry lists" of features and specs and forget that it's all just tools people use in order to get stuff done. That's why we have the Ignite IT Awards: to recognize the IT Pros and Developers who help make those tools sing and showcase the work that those tools and people make possible. Last week, we announced the winners of the 2009 Ignite IT Awards and I thought I'd mention them here.

Navantis won the IT Pro Award for their Community Caregiver Portal, social networking and information management system for caregivers across Canada. Built on Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, this solution provides some much-needed support to the 3 million caregivers across Canada.

The University of Calgary won the Developer Award for AgilePlanner for Digital Tabletop, a tool that helps agile software development teams whose members are scattered over the globe plan software. The digital tabletop makes an excellent interface for groups to share ideas.

Congratulation to Navantis and the University of Calgary on winning the 2009 Ignite IT Awards! We'll be holding them again in 2010, so keep your eyes open for innovative uses of Microsoft-based tools and technology -- they might be next year's winners!
