Moving Your Application to the Cloud |
Vol 14-9 | April, 2011 |

It’s been a while since we’ve talked about Cloud computing and Window Azure in the MSDN Flash Newsletter, so here we are with this edition of the newsletter talking about moving your application to the Cloud. Many are often discouraged from moving to the Cloud because of the thought of having to reengineer their solutions or applications to support the Cloud. Fortunately, that’s not the case as there are different ways in which you can take advantage of the Cloud.
Moving Your Solution or Application
In
Moving Your Solution to the Cloud
, I talk about solutions or applications that are designed for Windows Azure and those that are compatible with Windows Azure. Wherever you are on your product roadmap, don’t let that be a barrier to you realizing the development, infrastructure, and cost benefits of the Cloud and of Windows Azure. Having said that, it’s important to understand which areas of your solution or application can and cannot be modified easily to leverage Windows Azure. The best way to do that — give it a try!
Before you go ahead, make changes to your solution, and start testing those changes, you’re going to want to try it out on a simple application. This will give you an idea of the effort involved in moving to the Cloud.
My Challenge To You
I’m convinced that you’ll be surprised how easy it is to move to the Cloud, leveraging the skills and knowledge that you already have and the tools that you already know, so I challenge you:
1. Activate your FREE Windows Azure Pass today. On the
Windows Azure Pass
site, select Canada as your country and enter CDNDEVS as the promo code. Within 3-4 days, you'll receive an email advising you that your Windows Azure account has been activated.
2. Choose an adventure - If you’d like to go through the full experience of migrating and deploying an app, follow the steps in
Migrating and Deploying a Simple Cloud App
. If you’d like to only go through the deployment experience, follow the steps in
Deploying a Simple Cloud App
.
3. Take a screenshot of the Windows Azure Management Portal showing your application deployment in production. Click
here
for an example.
4. Send your screenshot to
cdnazure@microsoft.com
.
If your screenshot is one of the first 500 that are sent, you’ll be enjoying a few coffees or teas on me with a *$20 Tim Hortons gift card that I’ll be sending you! In addition, all submitted screenshots (excluding residents of Quebec) will be entered in a draw to win a copy of
Visual Studio Professional with MSDN
or
Expression Web Professional
. To find out more, click
here
for the full details and contest rules of your Windows Azure challenge.
I’d love to see as many people take part in the challenge as possible. If you know any other developers, please challenge them as well! My goal is to have every developer in Canada deploy at least one application to Windows Azure! As always, if you have any questions or need some help, please feel free to send me an
email
, a message on
Twitter
, or connect with me on
LinkedIn
. I’d be more than happy to help.
