Volume 10, Issue 13: July 2008
From the Editor
Dear IT Managers,
Hello, my name is Sasha Krsmanovic and I am the MVP (Microsoft Most Valuable Professional) lead in Canada.

MVP’s are exceptional technical community leaders from around the world who are awarded for voluntarily sharing their high quality, real world expertise in offline and online technical communities. Microsoft MVPs are a highly select group of experts that represents the technical community's best and brightest, and they share a deep commitment to community and a willingness to help others.

In one of the previous TechNet Flash newsletters your editor, Rick Claus, wrote: "Users most often complain and comment when something goes WRONG, instead of when things are going RIGHT - running smoothly and without any issues." I couldn't agree more. That is why I'm proud to be working with people who don't run away from people with problems. In fact, they proactively seek the problems out, in both online and offline technical communities. To learn more about the MVP Award Program, please see my guest blog posts at the TechNet Canada blog (Part 1, Part 2). Next time you see a Blog/Newsgroup/Web forum post or a presentation done by an MVP, you can be sure about the quality of information you are getting there. There are approximately 180 MVP’s in Canada and approximately 4000 MVP’s worldwide!

An example of the kind of advice MVPs can provide; SQL Server MVP Tom Moreau often refers people to the SQL 2008 virtual labs and says..

“Instructor-led education is my preferred training route. However, time and budgets can get in the way of that. The next best thing, IMHO, is the virtual lab. Hands-on is where learning really takes place. There is only so much you can get out of a book or the Books Online. Microsoft’s v-lab approach, breaks the time and budget barriers. With respect to time, you can do them virtually 24/7, except for maintenance windows. Re budget, they’re free – it doesn’t get any better than that. Oh, and if you need to ramp up on a certain aspect of SQL Server that is new to you, this is the way to go. I hope they develop more of these before they go RTM.”

He also says...

“If you are a SQL Server DBA, you will like the Declarative Management Framework (DMF). Instead of writing scripts to scrape your servers, searching for policy violations and then trolling through the reports, you can create policies that can enforce the policy itself. The policy can be enforced against a group of servers. That kind of thing will lower an enterprise’s Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), since fewer people will be needed to do the work. I’ve been in a number of places where the DBA role is under-staffed. This will allow those DBA’s to get their heads above water.”

If you have any questions on the MVP program, or would like to nominate someone for the program, please visit the MVP Program page or contact me directly. The most up to date list of MVPs, with their respective competencies can be found at MVP Directory.
