Volume 10, Issue 16: August 2008
From the Editor
Greetings New TechNet Flash Subscriber,
The wait is over!! As I recently posted on the Canadian It Pro Blog, SQL Server 2008 has been released and is ready to deliver a rich set of integrated services that enable you to do more with your data, such as query, search, synchronize, report, and analyze. Many of you have been evaluating the SQL Server 2008 CTP releases and may be ready to try out the RTM version. TechNet Plus subscribers can find RTM versions now available for download.

TechNet Magazine recently published an overview of the key changes and what you can expect from SQL Server 2008. You can also get a rundown of the various editions and components of SQL Server 2008 or take the free eLearning clinic available online to experience it for yourself. Also check out demos and videos of SQL Server 2008 for an idea on how the new features work, or get a little deeper with the 24 Hours of SQL Server 2008 for IT Professionals and 24 Hours of SQL Server 2008 for Developers webcast series.

You may be wondering about what you need to do to upgrade to SQL Server 2008. You can find guidance for upgrading to SQL Server 2008 or migrating to SQL Server 2008. If you are upgrading, be sure to check out Upgrade Advisor to Prepare For Upgrades.

If you want to test SQL Server 2008 out in a lab or sandbox environment, Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 is a great way to do so. In fact, SQL Server 2008 is supported running in a virtualized environment under Hyper-V so give it a try. The combination, in my opinion, is phenomenal. Additional resources to help you install and configure SQL Server 2008 that you may find useful include
Planning an installation of SQL Server
Installing SQL Server 2008
Quick Start Installation
Installation How-to Topics
Locating Previous Versions of SQL Server for SQL Server 2008 migration using Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit
Configuring SQL Server 2008

And finally, if you have a project that you think SQL Server 2008 would be great for, or are in the process of using it in your organization today, send me an email. I may be able to get you some additional help and resources in to smooth the path or case you run across any issues along the way.
