Volume 10, Issue 9: May 2008
From the Editor
Dear IT Managers,
If there is a common question we get asked when we come out to your community on one of our tours, it usually has to with licensing. Let’s face it, licensing is not always the easiest thing to get a handle on, especially if you are a small enterprise trying to figure out how to maximize the precious dollars you have available while at the same time ensuring you are compliant. One of the benefits larger organizations have had in this area is to use volume licensing to reduce the cost and manage their licenses. Even though none of us on the IT Pro Team are licensing specialists, I am still excited to share a recent addition to our licensing options that addresses the needs of small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs).

The Microsoft Open Value Subscription Program (provides a way for SMB customers to “subscribe” to the Microsoft software they want to utilize in their businesses in a “lease-like” fashion. This option provides the up-front cost-saving benefits of a lease-type model (no, it’s not an actual lease) where you can pay to use the software for a set period of time with the flexibility to increase or decrease in size as your business size does year over year. At the end of the initial term, you have the options to continue the subscription, buy out the subscription to own the licenses, or to end the subscription. In addition, you may be eligible to receive significant savings and price benefits at the time you enter into a Microsoft Open Value Subscription Agreement if you own current versions or one version prior to current versions of Microsoft software already!

To make things even better, because the Open Value Subscription program is part of the Open Value structure, every reseller out there will be able to offer Open Value Subscription to their clients through the same Volume Licensing Distributors they use currently, which means that you can contact any Microsoft Partner and take advantage of this program right away.

To find out more about the Microsoft Open Value Subscription program contact your nearest Microsoft Partner here. To find out more about Microsoft Licensing for SMBs, click here.
