Autumn is always an exciting time of the year at Microsoft as this is usually the time when a wave of new products hit the RTM, or release to manufacturing, stage.  This week is no different with the completion of Exchange Server 2010 which was announced on October 8th .  There are some big changes in Exchange Server 2010 , the one I find most notable is this is the first server to offer both on-premise and cloud based (aka hosted) service.  The virtually seamless operation, usability and integration of on-premise and hosted services offers great flexibility.

On top of that the most intriguing updates and features are...

- Better support for direct attached storage.  Everyone is trying to cut costs and one place where you can save a small fortune is on DAS which can cost much less than the equivalent SAN storage.

- Simple clustering and high availability.  E-Mail is the core for most organizations.  People can live without a lot but not without their email and Exchange 2010 brings ease in deployment and management of highly available Exchange-based systems.

- Improved mailbox management.  As much as e-mail is a productivity tool it can be a burden too.  There are just so many new features and functions when it comes to mailbox management and organization to ease the burden of e-mail that I love.  By far my favourite area of improvement!

- Built-in Archiving. Mail archiving is a top priority for most companies due to regulatory compliance and legal purposes but most haven’t implemented it because of the costs involved.  Integrated archiving should help achieve the archiving results required without breaking the bank!

There is a 120 trial available if you are looking to give it a try!  Be sure to check out the resources below for more on what’s new in Exchange Server 2010!
