Download the new Microsoft Lync Vol 12-20 | September, 2010
Email me
A couple of weeks back we announced Microsoft Lync  — product family formerly known as Microsoft Office Communications Server and Microsoft Communicator. I’ve been on the road with TechDays and out at Coffee and codes being the general mobile employee that I am. I honestly don’t know what I would do without the technologies that make up Microsoft Lync. I use them number of times a day and they help me be productive and stay in touch while on the road!

If I’m in Outlook or editing a document and I need to ask a quick question to someone who’s on my team — all I have to do is glance at the email header to see if the person is online, offline, busy or away. From that quick glance at their presence — I can then choose to chat them, call them directly to their phone or computer or maybe just decide to send them an email. The instant messaging component of Lync is team aware and allows you to choose different levels of acceptable interruption based on your presence and status. The job of Lync is to provide you with a single interface uniting voice, IM, Audio / Video / Web conferencing into a richer and more contextual experience as a single identity — no more signing in to different services with different IDs!

I am fortunate to be on the internal pilot deployment and use the new Lync client interface. I’m currently using it with my Microsoft Lifecam HD Cinema and Polycom Cx100 USB speakerphone.  HD videoconferencing in the home office or coffee shop.

If you are interested to see how Lync could work for you — you can download the public Release Candidate build from here .  Be sure to check out the TechNet resource center for all things Lync related.

Enjoy this issue.

Learn more about Server Virtualization

Hardware Virtualization uses software to create a Virtual Machine (VM) that emulates a physical computer. This creates a separate OS environment that is logically isolated from the host server. By providing multiple VMs at once, this approach allows several operating systems to run simultaneously on a single physical machine. Learn more.
