Today, more than ever, security administrators are caught in a Catch-22.  You want to give your end users the web access they require to do their jobs but at the same time web based threats are on the rise.  The latest Microsoft Security Intelligence Report shows that the number of phishing attacks quadrupled in May 2009 with social networking sites accounting for 76% of all phishing attacks.  With more and more businesses leveraging social networking what can you do?

I always recommend a layered approach to security and with the release of the Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG) we can apply that layered approach to web access as well.  One of the most exciting features of TMG is its use of Microsoft Reputation Services — a new cloud-based system hosted by Microsoft which maintains a centralized database of 45 million (and growing!) web domains and billions of web pages to help customers identify and block malicious web sites.

The flip side of the coin is helping to give users the same safe, secure access to internal resources from wherever they are and with the release of Forefront Unified Access Gateway (UAG) and support for SSL VPNs and DirectAccess in Windows 7 we can apply a layered approach to security to users whether they are internal or external to Microsoft’s on-premise network.
