Virtualization technologies provide a lot of benefits to infrastructure, from simplified management to ease of deployment to lab environments for testing and development.  A lot of people have been using virtualization for one reason or another and one common question I hear is how to keep offline virtual machines up to date.

Offline virtual machines, those stored in your library or archives, offer a challenge when it comes to updating since they are, well, offline.  They aren’t running, they aren’t communicating with your update servers so they don’t get updated.  This leaves them vulnerable when they are brought online.

The Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool 2.1 manages the workflow of updating large numbers of offline virtual machines according to their individual needs. To do this, the tool works with Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) 2008 or 2008 R2 and with either WSUS 3.0 (SP1 or SP2) or System Center Configuration Manager 2007 or 2007 R2 .  It is a free tool you can use to ensure your offline VMs are kept up to date so when it is time to deploy them you can help make sure it is safe to do so.

Give them a try and let me know what you think.
