Activate to Establish That You're Running Genuine Windows Vista
Activation is an anti-piracy technology that checks to see if your product key is being properly used based on the software license associated with it. All editions of Windows Vista must be activated with a valid product key within the first 30 days of use. The activation process is easy. Start by locating your 25-digit Windows Vista product key, which came with your Windows Vista software or your Windows Vista-based computer. Then follow the steps below.
The process begins when you install Windows Vista. Enter your product key, select the Automatically activate Windows when I'm online checkbox, and then click the Next button.
You'll have three days to install hardware or software products and to set up an Internet connection before activation will take place.
When the automatic activation process begins, a small notification window will appear on your screen.
Once Windows activates, a notification will tell you that activation was successful.
If you cleared the Automatically activate Windows when I'm online checkbox to delay activation, or if you have not provided a product key, a 30-day grace period in which to activate Windows will begin.
To enjoy the full functionality of Windows Vista, Windows must be activated within 30 days.
A notification will remind you to activate during the 30-day grace period.
When you click the notification, a Windows Activation dialog box will open. Click Activate Windows online now to enter a valid product key and complete the activation process.
If you don't want to activate, you can click Ask me later to return to your desktop.
If activation is delayed beyond 30 days, Windows enters a reduced functionality mode.
As you can see, the desktop is black, and there is no Start menu. A Windows Activation dialog box will provide you with the option to activate now, access your computer with reduced functionality, retype your product key, or select other ways to help you activate Windows.
Once you've activated your copy of Windows, you'll have full access to all of the rich features and benefits that are part of Windows Vista.
To provide continuing protection, Windows Vista may also require validation from time to time, which confirms your activation status. Learn more about validation.
Some product features are only available in certain editions of Windows Vista and may require advanced or additional hardware.
