Synch with Exchange Server Through Your PC

If your organization is running a previous version of Exchange Server or is not set up for mobility, you may still want to have access to your e-mail, calendar, contacts and tasks when you are away from your PC. By connecting your smartphone to your PC before you leave the office, you can take your current e-mail, calendar, contact, and task information with you.
The main difference between this approach and over-the-air synchronization is that you won't be able to receive updates on your smartphone while you're away from your PC.

Getting Started

Before you can set up your e-mail with Exchange Server, you will need to obtain the following additional information from your IT department:
  • Server name
  • Whether your server requires an encrypted (SSL) connection
  • Domain name
You will also need your:
  • E-mail address
  • User name
To set up synchronization between your smartphone and Exchange Server 2003 or above using a connection to your PC, take these steps:
  • Physically connect your smartphone to the PC through the USB cable.
  • If your smartphone came with a CD, install Activesync 4.5 or later to your PC from the CD. Otherwise, to download the latest version, go to www.microsoft.com/canada/windowsmobile/wm07/activesync/default.mspx and follow the instructions in the Sync Setup Wizard.
  • Choose the information you want to synchronize with your smartphone from your PC.
  • Select Finish.
Congratulations! The information you choose to synchronize should now be in your smartphone. Simply connect your device to your PC whenever you want to update your information.
If your PC is running the Windows Vista operating system, see the Windows Mobile Device Center for more information.
