The company decided to adopt Microsoft products and technologies because of the inherent integration and user familiarity that they offer. Sudarshan Chemical Industries Ltd. has specialized in colors and chemicals for over 50 years and has acquired a strong position in especially the color business in India. With over 35 percent market share they are the largest pigment supplier, among both Indian and MNC’s, in the fastest growing economy in the world. For the last decade Sudarshan has been aggressively expanding into international markets. And with growing sales in each continent, the company aspires to establish itself as a leading chemical brand, worldwide. However, with growth came along an IT infrastructure, which was characterized by multiple point solutions and redundant applications.
One of the company’s main challenges was to optimize the ways of communication. Currently, Sudarshan was using a Linux based messaging system along with McAfee Endpoint Protection Suite (EPS), which did not have the features or the capabilities needed. “Without an efficient way to communicate, we were wasting both time and money,” says Sandeep Mhalgi,

Sudarshan also determined that it needed an integrated collaborative environment that people could use to work more productively, without altering their everyday business processes. In addition, lack of control on IT asset management was also a big challenge.
Essentially, Sudarshan aimed to optimize its IT environment based on flexible, integrated enterprise-level applications. “Overall, we have an extremely dynamic environment, so we wanted to implement technology solutions that would streamline IT and business processes, and supports the company in quickly achieving future objectives,” says Sandeep Mhalgi.

Sudarshan decided to revamp its IT environment using Microsoft technologies. The company endorsed its decision by signing a Microsoft Enterprise Client Access License (CAL) Suite agreement in March 2010. The Enterprise CAL Suite offers the latest Microsoft business productivity and core technologies in one easy-to-manage license, at the same time providing the company with interoperable collaboration, security, communication, and desktop management capabilities. “The wealth of products that were included in the agreement and the integration that Microsoft makes possible, were all a major selection criteria for us,” says
Sandeep Mhalgi. “Plus, it made the most sense from a financial perspective.”
The company determined that the Enterprise CAL Suite supported capabilities that were needed, such as communication and collaboration, infrastructure optimization, and security.
In the entire journey so far, Genie InfoTech Pvt. Ltd., a Microsoft Gold Partner, helped Sudarshan implement all the Microsoft products effectively. Not only was this done in a time bound manner but their approach has helped the company achieve the objectives chalked for each of the projects.
Messaging System Upgrade
One of the Enterprise CAL elements that held particular interest for the company was communications, which it wanted to use to bring together its voice and data systems. Because it now has a licensing agreement in place, Sudarshan is working to migrate several parts of its existing infrastructure to take advantage of new functionality and IT management efficiencies. “With Exchange Server 2010 we not only have the latest functionality, but also the ability to adopt other products that require advanced messaging functionality to get the most value from them,” says Sandeep Mhalgi.
While the company cashed majority of the standard features provided by Exchange Server, overall it proved to be a more stable, simple to manage and less risky mailing solution.
Sudarshan used the collaboration features in Microsoft SharePoint Server 2007 to make it easier for employees to find and share documents such as project plans, customer-specific proposals and assessments, and internal policies. The company also plans to use SharePoint Server to build intranet sites where employees can share resources, access critical information, and make collaborative decisions. Sandeep Mhalgi says, “With multiple departments, huge documentation, and no document management system in place, collaboration was a big challenge. But now with SharePoint Server, sharing documents and working together efficiently is a breeze.”
IT staff members use SharePoint Server to share technical documents, circulate them and ask for each others’ feedback, and make decisions based on data. The company also has put in place a number of automated workflow processes through SharePoint Server.
SharePoint Server has helped the business to define, streamline, and enforce the Knowledge Management Portal according to the needs of the company. At the same time it has proved to be the central collaboration platform among employees. The portal helps the company in its endeavour to improve employee engagement to a great extent.
Security Infrastructure Changes
Sudarshan also used its Enterprise CAL Suite investment to deploy Microsoft Forefront security products to help safeguard its environment. It implemented Microsoft Forefront Online Protection for Exchange (FOPE), a hosted service that offers layered protection against spam and malicious software.
“Moving to the Microsoft Forefront Protection Suite gave us visibility into all virus-related activity,” says Sandeep Mhalgi. “The solution complemented our security roadmap. With the integrated portfolio of protection, identity, and access products, we can secure our environment and manage access across data, users, and systems.”
Sudarshan is also using Microsoft Office Communicator, which gives a one communication experience across all locations of organization, with enhanced communication capabilities such as instant messaging, conferencing and voice calls.
Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) is being used for IT asset management, which is now totally under control. SCCM has helped in managing the client comprehensively across all physical networks.
With the Enterprise CAL Suite agreement, Sudarshan has expanded IT services, deploying many Microsoft core technologies and products whose collective potential are a powerful incentive for innovation. “We are excited about the whole implementation,” says Sandeep Mhalgi. “With the combined functionalities of all products, we now have a platform we can use to expand our services.”Benefits

Sudarshan anticipates saving considerable resources each year because of its Enterprise CAL Suite investment. But the savings don’t end here. The business productivity infrastructure makes things more consistent, less manual, and more streamlined.
Savings are further attributed to reduced travel and communication costs, which amounts to U.S.$ 20,000 on an annual basis. The ESS portal build on the SharePoint platform as compared to building it on the core ERP product that the company is currently using, has saved a sum of U.S.$ 10,000 on a one time basis.

Employees are embracing all the functionality in SharePoint Server 2007. They can get more work done in less time because they no longer have to hunt through file shares and mailboxes to find what they need. In addition, unified communication capabilities are breaking down the barriers to communication on a global scale, so employees can contact each other, regardless of their device or location.

Enhanced Security, Increased Efficiency
Since implementing Forefront Online Protection for Exchange, Sudarshan has reduced the number of spam incidents on its network. Sandeep Mhalgi says, “FOPE protected us from spam, viruses, phishing mails etc.; which improved the productivity of end users by at least 20 percent as they need to deal with only business mails not with other junk. This has also translated into the efficiency improvement on the part of administrator too.”
