Driescher y Wittjohann (DRIWISA) is today an uncontested Mexican market leader, with an increasing export market penetration. However, as a manufacturing company, it needed to develop effective and effi cient logistics, in order to enable international competitive standards. A comprehensive application was needed to ensure perfect coordination between the suppliers and the company’s areas, so as to meet customers’ requirements. Given the fast growth in the number of units manufactured and sold, the implementation of an internal control system, based on advanced technology, became essential.

Driescher y Wittjohann (DRIWISA) is a Mexican company, founded in 1969, and has been an uncontested Mexican market leader with an increasing exporting market penetration since then. Their strong leadership is a result of their quality/price ratio and total satisfaction-oriented customer service, coupled with its versatility to manufacture special designs, its impeccable delivery time, and many other competitive advantages. Engaged in manufacturing air compact substations, indoor and outdoor disconnect switches, grounding switches, current limiting fuses, and resin insulators for indoor use, it has become a consistent company, with a quality and service policy, and a clear focus on the technical support work and the customer, distributors, agents and end-users training. Today DRIWISA equipment meets the strictest industrial specifi cations under international standards. Strategic business alliances have proved to be the adequate scheme for success, with the aim of expanding its market at country level and globally. Multinational corporations such as Schneider Group, Siemens, General Electric, Cutler Hammer, ABB and Areva, are some of its principal distributors; its main customer group is made up of Comisión Federal de Electricidad CFE, Petróleos Mexicanos PEMEX, and Luz y Fuerza del Centro, where DRIWISA is a reliable supplier. The Company started to export in 1985. Exporting activities have increased significantly since then. The main destination markets for DRIWISA’s products manufactured in Mexico are United States, Canada, Central and South America, and, most recently, South East Asia. The Company employs more than 280 people both directly or indirectly.

Business Challenge

DRIWISA is a company with a high productivity and efficiency scheme, constantly investing in product development and with a strict cost reduction program; it has gained a position as one of the companies with the best price profiles. However, due to the high growth level, and its commitment to offer quality services, the Company realized the need of implementing a comprehensive solution. In order to deal with the deficiencies of its prior system, it looked for a solution enabling the total data organization and gathering, the production control, the administrative and financial operations speed, as well as the automation of the different business processes and the adaptation to evolving market requirements (mainly in the exportation markets).

Solution

After discarding other 14 alternatives, DRIWISA decided to implement Microsoft Dynamics SL (formerly Microsoft Dynamics Solomon). Such decision was based on the fact that, apart from considering it the most adequate one, the solution was supported by Microsoft and Fillgap, a Microsoft Certified Partner that would be in charge of analyzing and

implementing the system based on the customer’s needs. On its first years, DRIWISA implemented a solution useful by that time, based on the company structure and the small amount of data it handled. However, as the Company’s production and sales increased, operations and control became more complex, and the original system did not provide the information neither the controls needed to make decisions on time. The Company restructured all its areas, starting by Systems. In 2002, Microsoft Dynamics SL operating process started, and it succeeded in solving the Company’s problems. “Its module integration enabled us to be sure that the data we furnish to the director is reliable, since our operations require increased activity control in order to manage available resources more efficiently, consolidate data and make adjustments in every process: Production Control, Bill of Materials, inventories, Accounts to Pay/to Collect, among others.
