SYMX Improves Patient Safety and Inventory Visibility Using BizTalk RFID

“Being an early adopter of RFID capabilities in BizTalk Server 2006 R2 and using a complete Microsoft solution stack allowed us to rapidly develop an adaptive inventory-visibility and workflow solution.”
Lewis Kilby, Program Director, SYMX Corporation

Business Needs

Every year, hospitals must over-purchase equipment and supplies by 20 to 30 percent to compensate for lost and stolen items. Doctors, nurses, and other staff waste valuable time looking for equipment, time that could be better spent on patient care. SYMX supports hospital staff and patients by delivering visibility and rules-based workflows in the healthcare setting.

Solution

With the help of Microsoft and Microsoft® Gold Certified Partner Innovative Architects, SYMX used Microsoft BizTalk® Server 2006 R2 to create the Asset Tracking Location Accountability System (ATLAS)—an automated and adaptive solution for inventory visibility and managed workflow that dramatically improves patient safety. The companies developed the solution in only four months using the Microsoft Visual Studio® 2005 Professional Edition development system and the Microsoft .NET Framework version 3.0.

Benefits

  • Real-time asset location and tracking. Using high-resolution radio frequency identification (RFID) and infrared technologies, a healthcare worker can easily request, track, and monitor assets from a computer, kiosk, or mobile device.
  • Enhanced patient care and safety. The solution provides customizable workflow routing and rules that trigger e-mail and text-message alerts when assets are used in potentially unsafe or unauthorized ways.
  • Open architecture and integration. ATLAS is highly scalable, modular, and easily connected. BizTalk adapters make ATLAS compliant with HL7 and HIPAA. Using its patented EDGE Device and BizTalk RFID, SYMX translates multiple RFID protocols and message types into XML that can be easily routed to other systems.
  • Reduced administrative overhead and expenses. By ensuring equipment visibility, maximized utilization, and inventory accuracy, ATLAS reduces wasted time, labor, and expenditures.
