Ministry of Economy and Finance, Greece

Government Agency Enhances Security, Eases IT Maintenance with New Operating System

“With Windows Vista, we have in our hands a great tool that is critical to our secure, efficient, and productive way of working and collaborating.”
—Mr. Marinos Sigalas, Chief Information Officer, General Secretariat of Information Society, Ministry of Economy and Finance, Greece

Business Needs

The Ministry of Economy and Finance in Greece is responsible for establishing budgets and economic reform policies. The Ministry has witnessed a steady increase in the number of employees who are mobile or working from remote locations and require access to sensitive data. At the same time, the agency was supporting more than fifty operating system images in its heterogeneous client computing environment that consisted of Windows® 3.11, Windows XP, and Windows 2000 operating systems.

The agency sought to provide employees with mobility options, while simplifying IT management, and maintaining the security of its systems and the confidentiality of critical information.

Solution

The Ministry decided to deploy the Windows Vista® Enterprise operating system and Microsoft® Office Professional Plus 2007 to 8,000 desktop computers and 2,000 laptop computers. After completing application compatibility testing, the Ministry began the upgrade in March 2008. It plans to complete its deployment by June 2008.

As part of the deployment, the Ministry is implementing Windows® BitLocker™ Drive Encryption and Group Policy. It is also choosing Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications.

Benefits

  • The Ministry reduced the number of images it manages from more than fifty to only one standardized image—resulting in easier IT maintenance.

  • IT staff who need to run a UNIX-based application can now use a Windows Vista–based computer instead of using a separate workstation—helping to reduce hardware costs.

  • By implementing Windows BitLocker and Group Policy, the Ministry can grant mobile and remote access to employees with confidence.
